CD/DVD drive not working!

This has probably been asked before but here we go....

I have a emachines 8120 desktop running on XP home (Validated). Until recently I had an NEC 1130 DVD writer which one day just stopped working I was advised to try to clean and reinstall, this didn't work.

I then bought a NEW Pioneer DVD writer which worked, copied disk's etc, but now has stopped working. It writes a little to disk when using Roxio but then dies and also will not allow me to explore or run disks...... I have again tried to reinstalling to no avail.

Any advice? My Motherboard, sound card, video card and Pentium 4 3.2ghz are about 4 years old now but the RAM has recently been updated.!! (After the first failure of DVD drive)

When you upgraded the RAM you may have knocked something loose inside of the machine. Check all cables inside and make sure everything is properly seated.

I would make it the first boot device then try to boot to a known bootable disk. If it boots it's a windows issue, if it doesn't it's a bad drive
