computer not finding hardware
Hey.
last week i got home a AMD-K6-2 computer, a real oldie wich i wanted to turn into an ubuntu server. so i plug it in with a mouse and keyboard, i plug in a HDD from my main computer (20 giger) wich is working and a spare CD/DVD rom. it had 300mb sd ram. i start the computer and the the booting past the "IBM" logo goes fine, but when it has found the mouse and keyboard it beeps 2 times then goes to a black screen with the text "insert a system disk or press enter to reboot" i guessed that the IDE cables where broken and switched them out but get the same message, the computer do not find my HDD or CD-rom, i tryed diffrent Cde roms and HDD's with the same resault... anyone know how i can solve this ? |

Re: computer not finding hardware
Make sure the jumper on the hdd is set to master and on the end of the ide cable and connected to the primary ide connection on the motherboard.
Make sure the cdrom is connected to the secondary ide connection,is jumperd as master, is the only device on that cable and is jumperd also as master. Make sure both drives have power and are listed in bios. Make sure your bios is set to boot from 1st cdrom, 2nd hdd, don't forget to save when you exit bios. Try again and good luck |

Re: computer not finding hardware
Hey there, i tryed the CD-Rom and HDD as both slave and master settings with the jumpers, but they dont get listed in Bios, i tested the HDD and as said above on both master / slave on obth IDE1 and IDE2 on the motherboard with diffrent IDE cables and they dont get listed in bios.
both drives have power as the HDD starts to spin, and the cd-rom led is blinking the HDD and Cd-rom is not broken as they work in my primary computer. the current boot setting was 1st cdrom, 2nd hdd, |

Re: computer not finding hardware
For now, disconnect the rom completly.
Clear the cmos, either by the mainboard jumper or pop the buttton battery out for 10 minutes, after you unplug the power supply, and after you grab the metal case to de-static yourself. Try the jumper on cable select or even without the jumper. Examine the pins on the drive, make sure they are not bent. Dont trust old ribbon cables, they are cheap, start off with a new 80 wire cable. If you are lucky enough to get the bios to reconize the hard drive on IDE #1, then go for the rom installation, either have it set on master going directly to IDE#2 ..or jump it as slave it, and put it on the middle take off of the hard drive ribbon cable. Let us know-

Re: computer not finding hardware
Hey again, i removed the rom, and had the HDD plugged in only, i tryed with a brand new IDE cable this time, i took out the battery for 12 hours after i unplugged the PSU.
i then tested the HDD on Master, slave cable select, and it didint work. the IDE channel i was testing on was IDE1, i checked the pins on the drive and non are bent, i even tested it in another computer again, and it works. so my problem is still at large, the computer cant find the HDD :/ |

Re: computer not finding hardware
hey, yes i tryed IDE2, the strange thing is that it worked before i got it, they took the HDD that had windows 98 on it before giving it to me so i would not bet it's the motherboard :/

Re: computer not finding hardware
I really don't know what else it would be, lets recap, we know,,,,,,,,
You have known working drives and they are getting power. tried a new ide cable, made sure jumpers are correct and the drives are placed properly on the cables Tried both ide connections on the board Drives still not seen in bios. Please correct anything I did not cover. Now lets give this one more go, I know you tried these things but lets try again. Connect the hdd to ide1, set the jumper as master and connect it to the end of the cable. Connect the cdrom to ide2, set its jumper as master and put it at the end of the cable. Clear the cmos, by unplugging the computer and removing its battery for 5 minutes. Start the computer, enter bios and load the defaults, don't for get to save when you exit. Forget about the driv settings in bios, make sure the is a known bootable cd in the cdrom and start the computer. Does it boot from cd? |
