old lappy, new-used lappy
So, I have my old laptop, and i want to take all the old stuff I still need off of my hard drive and put it on the new laptop. My google search was fruitless when searching for information on how to do this. I probably don't know what I'm looking for, so I'm here.
My partner told me that one way to do it involves some cable he could borrow from his friend. That could take weeks to happen, and I'd prefer to learn as I go along. I think he said there was some other option, but seeing as though he is perpetually gaming, I don't forsee him explaining that anytime in the near future, either. Pardon my ignorance, and thank you for edifying me as to how I transfer my stuff. Oh, since this is the hardware "other" forum, I guess I can ask this here, too... my old lappy, a HP Omnibook 4150 has RAM my partner says can be put in the new-used lappy, an IBM thinkpad 390x. When I go to do this, he said it should just be fine. Do people ever have problems when they do this kind of thing? Is there anything messy I should expect to encounter? I would think not, but as I said, I know nothing. Thank you! |

Re: old lappy, new-used lappy
That HP memory will likely work fine in the IBM. It's pretty easy, and you really shouldn't have a problem. Just remove the memory door from underneath and you'll see how the sticks go in/come out. Are you sure the IBM has an available (empty) memory slot? As for the transfer, do you want to just transfer files, or do wish to transfer settings as well? If it's just files, how about a flash drive? If it's files and settings, you'll need a cable from the friend.

Re: old lappy, new-used lappy
ah, duh. my flashdrive, thank you! I even know how to do that. ideally, I won't transfer any of the settings, and i'll figure those out for myself. Though, I should ask, does "settings" include any of the programs I have on here that I might want to keep? I would think that I could save Zbrush to the flashdrive and then transfer, but I'm not certain.... thank you again!

Re: old lappy, new-used lappy
No, settings would not include any programs. Any programs would have to be reinstalled. If you have the install program on the hard drive then you could copy that transfer it.
