Webcam issues

My friends webcam is not working. It does not connect to msn and when she plugs it in nothing comes up. I thought it was the driver but she says she has that. We have tried everything I could think of but we ran out of options.

-There are no markings on it
-Nothing comes up when plugged in
-MSN says their a webcam connected but it shuts the cam off when it is selected to show.

What I want is a program that will identify the webcam make or model. Or perhaps some basic things we can do.

Note I have no idea where this thread should go but this forum section fit what I thought it would be.

What operating system is your friend running?
