Bad Parts

I think I've found why my computer is soooo messed up, its been crashing and restarting alot lately. No warning, no errors, no slow downs. It just does it. It happens during game ALOT. I've come up with some possibilities. 1) Hard Drives bad, so when I try to access the games files, it crashes. 2) Processor is overheating. 3) PSU can't pump enough juice to GFX so once again, will result in a crash.

Yes, I know I need a new computer, but I am having some family problems. Even if this is nothing; or something that cannot be fixed, its better to know.

Thanks,
Tim

Re: Bad Parts

Ok, its not the CPU its reads 61C after crashes. Which shutdown is 85C, it could be the HD but no recent noises...I'm thinking about just saying screw it and buying the system anyways. It'll be easier than trying to guess the broken part. Plus I'm using good parts this time, so it will hopefully last alot longer.

Re: Bad Parts

What PSU do you have?

Enter your full system specs into this power calculator, and add 30% to the total to allow for PSU inefficiency.

Burn the hard drive diagnostics program from the manufacturer's website onto CD or floppy, change the boot order in BIOS, insert the disc and it will boot into a hard drive testing utility.

Run memtest to test your RAM, one stick at a time for at least 10 passes each.

Re: Bad Parts

Its the junky Rosewill case powersupply. Its adequate to handle the system its nothing special. I did those tests at first to troubleshoot it, nothing wrong as far as I see. I ran them again still came up fine. Its puzzling me, and when I say restarting I mean it will shutdown then start up, then before the motherboard POST it will restart over and over again. Which sounds like the PSU or mobo are going out, but I have no clue. I'm better with Windows environment.

Re: Bad Parts

Looks like you need a new PSU. Test the voltages again using SensorsView to confirm the low +12V value.

Re: Bad Parts

SensorsView is reading 11.43V. Round & round we go.

Re: Bad Parts

That's still at the low end of the acceptable range. Check again under stress and post the full SensorsView results, temperatures and voltages.

Re: Bad Parts

What type of "stress" do you suggest?

Re: Bad Parts

A 3D game for a few minutes, something that will push the graphics card and hard drive. Leave SensorsView running while you play and Alt-Tab back to see the values.

Re: Bad Parts

Did you enter your specs into the power calculator and run the hard drive diagnostics?

What does it say on the PSU label for the Amps for +12V?

Re: Bad Parts

I think your PS is about dead. I wouldn't trust any temps. coming from the unit if the cpu is running hot. Know anybody with one of those portable hand-held digital thermometers? Your voltages are way too low on the PS. My cpu fan always runs around 4k rpm, couldn't help but notice yours runs @2250. I don't know how big your fan is or fast it should run, though.
