Is my computer build OK?

I'm building my first computer on and just want to be absolutely sure all parts are compatible.

The total price is about $800 which turned out to be $100 over my plan. If you have any suggestions on how to reduce the price without affected the performance in a big way I'd much apreciate it. (The computer will be used for mid-level gaming and basic desktop use)

Also, I'm kinda powersupplyophobic. If you can recommend a PSU that is good and very easy to use or can give advice on the one I'd already chosen I'd appreciate it as well lol.

I already have the monitor, keyboard, and speakers.

It will run on Windows Vista Home Premium thought I'll probably use the update disk that came with it to upgrade to ultimate. If there is anything on my build that won't work well with vista please tell me.

All I'm really picky about is at least 1gb of ram and no less than a 150GB hard drive.

If you think this PSU is better plz tell me because there is a combo deal with the case and the psu for $130

Re: Is my computer build OK?

If you're going to do any gaming, I'd suggest going with the Intel Conroe. You can move up to the E6400 for about the same price as the AMD you have listed.

You will want the "trio" line of the Antec series.

First of all, thanks a lot for this. A few questions:

-Is the 650 watt True Power Trio for the +$10 worth it over the 550?
-I had been looking at the 6300, but my 4 year old computer had 1.8Ghz and was TERRIBLE. Isn't 1.8GHz a bit low-end now? Or have I got this all wrong? (probably )
-I don't really need all those extra slots and connectors at all in the mobo. Does it really have to be that expensive?

Re: Is my computer build OK?

Even a Core 2 Duo Conroe @ 1.86 GHz is an excellent processor. It is much more efficient than other processors and has higher performance like AMDs were more efficient. That processor will stomp all over my 2.0 GHz Sempron, and for that matter, even a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4.

What that motherboard has that makes it shine is a good chipset. The 975X is Intel's best consumer 9 series chipset. It also supports crossfire, so if you wanted to have a dual graphics card setup in the future, you wouldn't have to get another motherboard. Remember, the chipset is almost as important in performance as the processor. Also, MSI makes much better quality motherboards than ECS IMO. I have a working MSI motherboard at my house that is 12 years old.

Re: Is my computer build OK?

Since it is a retail box, yes, although having a tube of Arctic Silver 5 around is always a good idea. Retail boxes have heatsinks and grease so you don't need to buy extra things. OEM processors however only come with the processor and nothing else.
