Need Help Now With Monitor!!!
I have a monitor that came with a package comp. I bought 2 yrs ago that keeps flashing on and off, mostly when the computer starts up and shuts down, but now I can't get it to start because I can't see anything except the stupid flashing green light!!! Here is a list of things I have tried
at least one of these used to work in the past, now nothing is working...oh and I have tried plugging another monitor into the computer, but to no avail. any advice???

Also, if your laptop has a vga port and your monitor is vga(or you have a dvi to vga adaptor) you should be able to try the monitor with the laptop. If it works, then as Dai stated either your psu is bad, or your videocard is bad....list all your components next time you post, it will help us help you.

VGA = Video Graphics Array - it's a standard for computer monitors. You can get a list of the hardware in your computer by using Everest, which you can download from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Your computer came with intergrated graphics, but it also should have an AGP slot, when you ordered the computer did you upgrade the graphics to a descrete videocard....if so, then you can turn the cmputer off, take out the videocard and enable the onboard graphics and see if that works. Also if you do have a descrete videocard then you will also have a vga port on the mobo and from the videocard....make sure your monitor is plugged into the enabled device. Otherwise I suspect like Dai, your psu is dead, which is why you were having the initial problem on startup as the psu slowly died.

eneles: not that I know of!!
twajetmech: I bought the computer from the store...I didn't upgrade anything as it was a higher end computer at the time (2 yrs ago) I probably sound dumb but I don't know what an agp slot is and I don't know how to take out the videocard. |

As with most HP/Compaq's in its class, it probably came with a generic 300W psu, barely enough power to run it. Luckily it is a standard ATX psu. a decent replacement will not be expensive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371005

That's okay, you probably only have the intergrated graphics then....I'd go for a new psu. There should be a sticker on the psu somewhere that states its wattage, there is no harm in putting in a psu with a higher wattage than what you have now, so if you find that the psu is a 300W unit and replace it with a 350W or 400W unit, that's okay. A new psu may have a 24 pin power connector, and your mobo probably has a 20 pin....have no fear, almost all of the 24 pin conectors snap to make them into a 20 pin....and you can always leave the extra 4 pins hanging off the mobo if it doesn't.

The easiest test is to "stress" the computer by multitasking - running several programs simultaneously. Or - you could download a benchmark program like Sandra. But that will only reveal the symptoms - not the cause. The best you can do (IMHO) is to try another PSU.
