DVDs too dark

Whenever I play a DVD, the picture is too dark to watch. Any ideas? The monitor settings are ok for non-DVD video (.mpg, etc.).

Is it totally black or just dark? If it's totally black, you may have a codec problem. Otherwise, there are usually settings in the display properties for DVD playback. If not, look in the settings of your video player for a brightness control.

I fiddled with Windows Media Player, but none of the settings looks good. It's not a codec problem, because there's an extremely dark picture. Any suggestions? The monitor settings are ok for everything else except DVD.

what media player are you using? If you're doing this with windows media player, then you'll be able to adjust the brightness by going to view-> enhancements ->video settings

I found the video settings for WMP. Unfortunately, the four settings offered don't help any.
