DVD writer wont read/write DVDR's..but WILL read/write CDR's

Hi,

I used to burn movies etc all the time on my DVD writer on any DVD's (DVD+-R/RW), now when I put a dvdR in the drive, the green light flashes for about 2 seconds and then I hear a little noise in the drive and it doesnt recognize the dvd (I've tried different types of DVDR and even original dvd's) but nothing.

The strange thing is, it still reads and writes CD's and CDR's!

Anyone kow what could be the problem?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Who makes the DVD-ROM? Have you switched brand of DVD's?

Try completly removing the drivers that came with it then rebooting and reinstalling them with the CD that came with the drive.

Make, model and age of the burner would be helpful?

What often happens with DVD burners is the circuitry for DVDs faults and this won't allow you to read/write DVDs. CDs will still be able to be read and written as the CD portion of the electronics still works.

Hi,

I tried removin it and putting it back in but still nothing.

I dont know the make/model and not sure if i have the cd that came with it.

I think the circuit has gone for the DVD (its the noise it makes when trying to load a dvd).

I think I will just buy a new DVD writer !

many thanks

I think in your case you may be better off getting a new one. Fortunately they are very cheap now days.

Agreed...you can get a top of the line Plextor for under $100. Plextor offers excellent firmware.
