Filters

What is the drawback of deleting the upper and lower filters in registry editor for the optical drive?

This is used to fix problems caused by CD burning software when you can't see the drive in Explorer. There is no drawback, but you shouldn't need to do it unless you have a drive problem.

Yes this is what I explained to a friend who is a programmer and he insisted that if we deleted the filters, its an invitation for virus and spam to enter the system through the optical drive.I doubt if that's true.

That's a new one to me. Removing upper/lowerfilters from other registry keys might have some security issues, but the ones in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} are safe to remove.

Reboot and everything will be back to normal. You may need to reinstall your burning software, but that's all.
