Computer won't turn on
Resently, I've had two problems with my computer (OS: XP) that seem to be connected, though I don't understand really how ,as one I would think was a hardware problem but the other seems like a software problem. It started a few days ago when I got the message that a new device (unknown) had been detected (my XP´s in swedish so I don't know exactly how to translate it), which came as a supprise to me, as well; I hadn't connected anything new to the computer for months. But curious as I was, I let it do a search for drives anyway (it found none). Then I tried to get start explorer, and got the 404 for all URLs, checked the local network connection which seemed to be running fine. Restarted the computer; same thing again, told it not to give me the new device detected thing in the future. Turned the computer off, tried to turn the computer on again; nothing. I really mean nothing, not windows wont start up or something like that, I press the button and absolutely nothing happens, for about 15- 20 minutes, when it finally turns on again. This now happens every other time I try to start the computer.
If you need to know my level of (in)competence with hardware stuff if there's something I should be checking, I've switched harddrives and graphic cards and such but I'm not very knowledgable at all really. Shown by the fact I don't know how to conveniently get this thing to give me a list of all the harware involved, like *** my motherboard is called, I know it's a MSI something or other motherboard, Athlon 64 3500+ processor, I'm guessing it's the motherboard due to the now starting at all and finding new harware when there is none? |

Welcome to TSF,
Download the drive manufacturer's utilities for your drive and run the diagnostics program if Linderman's repair install doesn't fix things. If your drive controller is headed south, either Bios, windows or both may be spending an inordinately long time trying to detect the drive Bill |
