Hi friends,
I use WinXP Pro with SP2. The audio is onboard VIA AC'97 codec. I can't configure properly the Mic- can't even figure out how to test it. Could someone please help me with this problem? Thank you.

Hi src2206,
Try this and see if it helps... Right click on the volume icon in the system tray > Open Volume Control, now if the Microphone is not visible in the new pane...do this... Options > Properties; now scroll down and tick the box for the microphone in both Record and Playback; then once the panel shows the microphone, untick the 'mute' and see if that helps. Once you have done that, you can test the hardware by doing this... Right click the Volume Icon again, but this time go 'Adjust Audio Properties' > Voice > Test Hardware and follow the prompts. Post back with the outcome.

Hi Dave,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply. Yes I have reached till the level of testing the harware using the wizard. But while I'm reading the recording meter is not showng anymovement. I have ensured that both my speakers and the mic are properly connected. Do I need MS Speech Engine? Please help. Thank you again.

Hi again src2206,
Just a couple of quick questions... When did this issue start? Has it always been like this or not? MS speech engine might help, but lets see the answers to my questions first please.

Honestly I do not use Mic much. Today I needed it to be used and found out its not working. In the last week I reinstalled XP and after that this is the 1st time I'm using it. I can remember using Mic successfully with my previous XP installation. Hope this answers your question. Thank you.

OK...this might sound stupid, but did you reinstall the sound drivers from the motherboard CD when you did the Xp reinstall?
Otherwise you'll need the MS speech engine.

A couple of things...go into Device Manager, and see if there are any Yellow exclamation marks in the sound and audio devices section...if there are, go update driver; reboot and see what happens..if you don't get any joy from that, or there are no !!'s.; just make sure that the mike is plugged into the correct socket in the back of the case. [I've fallen foul to this myself!]

Hiya Dev,
Good news is I solved the problem but the bad news is I do not know the reason behind the problem yet, and thats bothering me a lot. This is what I have done: 1. Inserted the MB driver CD and clicked on the Via Sound Driver. 2. It gave me 2 options: a>Install driver; b>Uninstall driver where option <b> was selected by default. 3. Chose to uninstall. 4. Uninstalled and restarted. 5. As soon as I restarted, "New Hardware Found" wizard poped up, mentioning a new hardware 'multimedia controller is found'. 6. I chose for automatic installation. 7. It installed (during this period the Driver CD was inside my ROM drive) and voala! mic was recognised and worked like a charm. Now I need your comments on this. Can I never update my Sound driver 'cause I'm sure that the problem creeped in after my last update? If I can then what should be ideal process to follow? Please help me out in understanding this problem. Thank you very much.

Well Done src2206,
Believe it or not that was going to be my next step! I have a MSI board too, and every time I go anywhere to update the audio drivers, I get nothing but grief!! So, I console myself by referring to my signature!! I'm sincerely glad its resolved....I love a happy ending!
