Crashs a lot

I have a Gateway 830 GM. It has crashed 4 times since I have owned it, (about a year) and has frozen up more times than I can count. Does anyone know what is the problem with this model computer? I have had several HP's and never had any problems with them. This thing is driving me crazy. One tech suggested it is the ram but did not elaborate on any solutions. Any help would be appriceated.
