CPU Temperature Question

Motherboard - Intel D945GPM, Socket 775
CPU - Intel Pentium D 840, Socket 775, 3.2Ghz
RAM(512MBx2, Dual Channel) - Corsair, DDR2, 533 Mhz, 512MB
Video Card - None Yet
Hard Drive - Seagate, IDE, 250GB
Power Supply - Ultra X-Connect, 500-Watt, 34 amps on +12v rail.

What should my maximum cpu temperature be?

The Pentium D's run hot to begin with. I'd suggest trying to keep it in the 40-45C range idle (or lower is always better if you can get it lower). What are your current temps? Tell us your idle (such as when the computer is sitting on the desktop doing nothing) and at load (just after playing a game for at least 20 minutes).
If your really worried about temps, then you could look into some aftermarket CPU coolers. Zalman makes some great ones.

Cheers!

well my cpu temp usually ranges from 47-60 degrees celsius, that's y i am worried. when i play a game for like 30-60 minutes it goes to rises to 70 and goes down and goes up and goes down. also my intel desktop utilities warns me when its at 70 degrees celsius or higher. also its hard to find a fan that will fit in the motherboard i hav. I hav seen the zalman cooler but its too big and won't fit in my motherboard.

Have you looked at this fan?

I see that your northbridge cooler is very large, which is what is making it hard to find a compatible cooler. This one I suggested may work though, so you might want to look into it.

Also, what is your case cooling like? How many fans do you have, where are they located, and which direction are they blowing?
Do you have a lot of wires/IDE cables/etc in the way that could be blocking airflow?

Well, I'd say you could use another case fan or two. You didn't mention which way the fans were blowing (out of/into the case)? The one on the back near the PSU should be blowing out, the on on the side could go either way, and you should also have on on the lower part of the front (such as in front of the harddrives) to blow cool air into the case. A good recomendation is to get at least 240mm of fans, so 2 120mm (1 front, 1 back) or several 80mm's, etc. But you should at least have one in the front and 1 in the back.

y does the one by the psu hav to blow out? is it so that it won't interfere with other airflow? btw did i mention that there is something that directs the airflow right above the cpu fan? it directs the cpu fan's cooling out of the case. it came with the case.

The back fan by the PSU is generally to blow air out because hot air rises and the standard setup of air flow for an ATX computer case is cool air goes in at the lower front, and warm air goes out at the upper back, making a nice air flow accross your harddrives, RAM, CPU, video card, and motherboard.
Can you post a picture of the inside of your case with your air duct? Also, what CPU cooler are you using? Most have the fan down, which blows air onto the processor and the duct may not be doing what you thought it was doing.
