ECC with NON-ECC

Hello to all, I am a first time user. My problem is to do with Memory Modules. I recently purchased a pair of 256mb Dimms, brand new and sealed but no longer manufactured. One worked perfect in either available slot, the other was duff. These modules are ECC type.
I returned the duff one back to the manufacturer, the replacement would only work on its own, as does the other original working one.
On checking their Website for info, I discovered that they sent a NON-ECC type as a replacement.
Can they work together ? ECC + NON ECC. Or does the problem lie elsewhere?
Any help or comments would be appreciated,

Probably sounds a stupid question to all you buffs.

Thanks,

Golfinch.

I normally advise against using modules of different types. You can mix ECC and non-ECC modules as long as they are not registered modules.

Welcome to the forum goldfinch, good to have you with us.

I think you should've had them both replaced, try replacing the older one now but tell them you want one that will be compatible with the one they sent you.

Trying to get the hang of this Forum business, think I sent off half of a reply and then cocked it up. Anyway, thank you to both crazijoe & MunkyPhil for your advice, as it turned out, I do have both NON-ECC & Registered ECC. And when I got in touch with the manufacturer, they admitted their error and will be sending out the correct module. Just goes to show, what guys like you, can do for a guy like me. Thanks for your advice. Take care.
