Monitor Flashes On and Off

I have a Dell UltraSharp 18" LCD monitor. When my PC comes up (or is activated from standby), my monitor flashes on and off 8 or 10 times. Finally, it settles down and works fine. But it's driving me crazy when it flashes on and off. I've reinstalled the nVidia driver, changed the screen refresh rate with values of 60, 70, 72 and 75 hertz (doesn't seem to make any difference) and still the problem persists. Can anyone help me out here? Do I need a new monitor, cable, etc.? I'm at a loss to fix this problem. Thanks for the help ...

OS: XP, Waiting for Vista serivce pack 1 before I commit.

this is only best guess but I would try this.

right click the desktop.
Properties/Screen saver/power

Run through the tabs and experiment. I've looked at the setting and there is nothing in there that would be fatal if you get it wrong so go play.

Just for fun mine is set to.
Power schemes.
Always on
Turn off monitor = After 20mins
Turn off Harddisk = Never
System hybernates = never

Advanced
Nothing relavent here to change

Hybernate
Enable

APM
Enabled.

UPS not fitted.

Yea I did notice that Hybernation is enabled and the setting for hybernation is set to never. But whatever, it works!

If it ain't broke don't fix it.
