Hi,

In addition to looking at other threads of this nature, it might be a good idea to give us some idea on the budget you intent to stay within. That we it is possible to stay within a framework initially instead of suggesting something that is not within budget and having to redo it.

I suggest you only go with 3GB of RAM as Windows can't really use any more than that.

Athlon64 5000+ to start

2x GeForce 7950's in SLI...

ya, forgot the budget part.... there isnt really one.. probably will be 4k us dollars. if i need to spend a little more then fine. and thanks for the advice on the RAM, but i was planning on the fact that i dont want to improve my comp every two months when a new game comes out. also not a big audiophile so not two worried about sound.. just want to be able to hook up a surround sound.
right now am looking at a WD 500gb hdd and the GeForce GTX video card. not sure on what case or what mobo to get

Google Sharky Extreme and take a look at their Gaming PC recommendations...they build three levels; Budget, Value, and Extreme PC. Sometimes the info is a month or two old but still they have some good ideas and explain why they chose what they did. Fun and educational to read.

Also, Anandtech has similar guides under their "Guides" tab. However, I just went there and checked - nothing recent. You never know when they'll add something new! Are you set on using AMD? There oughta be some interesting articles soon based on the new Core 2's...

hehe might help if i clarify what i am doing. I go to Germany soon, and i want to take with me a desktop that i can use over there and not have to worry about upgrading it while i am over there. I play some pretty extensive games (battlefield 2, WoW, everquest..) and i also use auto cad. Like i said earlier, budget isnt really a question, however, i am also not wanting to have a computer that is worth more than my car ;) i might upgrade to vista if i see that it can do more for me than XP... umm anything else you want to know about my plans?

The folks testing out pre-releases of Vista seem to be pretty much underwhelmed...I think your money would be better spent on cool hardware.

It doesn't appear that Core Duo threatened AMD's desktop CPU supremacy, but the reviewers are going ga-ga over Core 2 Duo. Have you read the latest issue of MaximumPC? They built their annual Dream Machine around the fastest Core 2 Duo they could get their hands on. Worth reading.

Anandtech also wrote up a review that you might want to read before spending big bucks on an AMD chip. I'll borrow one paragraph from the "Conclusions":

"Compared to AMD's Athlon 64 X2 the situation gets a lot more competitive, but AMD still doesn't stand a chance. The Core 2 Extreme X6800, Core 2 Duo E6700 and E6600 were pretty consistently in the top 3 or 4 spots in each benchmark, with the E6600 offering better performance than AMD's FX-62 flagship in the vast majority of benchmarks. Another way of looking at it is that Intel's Core 2 Duo E6600 is effectively a $316 FX-62, which doesn't sound bad at all."

I would have to say with you budget you could build HAL (old movie about a living computer) hhehehehehehh

now on to serious:

without the nasty old budget noose hanging on our necks >>>> what a relief for a change! I would dare say for $2500.00 you could build an ultra extreme gaming rig

Asus motherboard
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?m...1=3&l2=11&l3=0
& Intel conroe E6600
Silverstone 750 watt PSU
High Performance memory from OCZ, Crucial, Corsair two one gig sticks
pair of Nvidea 7900 video cards or ATI 1900 crossfire cards
Antec P180 Case

I would be a nervous wreck shipping this rig to Germany!!!!! I would defintely break it down into component form !!

well her is the catch >>>> in order to keep a system runnign in dual channel you need to keep memory installed in match pairs of all the same spec

I personally would stick with 2 gigs then if two years from now you change to Microsoft Vista then add 2 more gigs but as long as you are using Win XP Pro I would stay with 2 gigs

ok makes sense, also, right now which video card setup is considered most stable.. now i know i am causing a war, but is the ATI crossfire setup as good as that quad Nvidia? 1gig of video is pretty tempting... although not sure if i need that much. thanks

I would stay away from thermaltake (not the best PSUs). Here is a good one. Its a little extra money, but its a worthwile investment.

FSP Group (Fortron Source) FX700-GLN ATX12V/ EPS12V 700W Quad. SLi Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104015

You can also get an X1800XT with 256 bit memory (and faster) for a little more

SAPPHIRE 100154 Radeon X1800XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 CrossFire Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102007
If out of stock:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814102007R

Perhaps you can find those on ibuypower (sorry, I couldn't find them).
