RIP: Dual Cores here comes Quads

AMD just announced they've started development of quad core processors. Expected release: mid-2007. Aren't you glad you didn't shell out $1000 for that Core 2 Duo?

Things like this are why I'm always following AMD.

This article is about the quad core Opteron. Opteron procesors are usually more suited for servers. Intel has been playing around with quad cores since Feburary and slated a release date of theirs late 06/early 07.

all this stuff is great news fellas! if only somebody would starting writing some software that makes full / optimal use of dual core and quad core capabilities

its kinda like releasing the bullet trains >>>> if you dont have the tracks all accross the country to use the bulet train what good is it ????

even now >>>> a 3800 single core san diego will still kick the snot outta any dual core while in a single tasking application

why not grab the windows 64 bit vista >>>> hardly any software or drivers available but why not have it anyway

Plus you are going to have to expect AMD to make a big splash and really gear up the PR machine >>>> after all they are behind a couple of touchdowns now!

Leave it to Sinclair_tm. How very true he is.

Actually I have seen a performance improvement when I switched from a single core to a dual core. But I also do plenty of multi-tasking.

Hi linderman,

Does your logic mean that it would not be wise to run a Porsche down a gravel road with the lights out at night at 160 mph ????????

unless of course its a full moon on a clear night. then it can be as bright as an overcast afternoon, which would make it ok to travel 160mph with the light off.

always has, and always will, especially now that its the only hardware that will run all the current main oses.

but thats besides the point, back on topic people!

i can't wait until intel releases a 8 core chip, then the mac pro will have dual 8 core, for 16 total processors. truly a super computer.

No problem. Here's me doing exactly that.

Except it's not night. It's not 160 mph. And it's not me.

But it is pretty cool that it could be.

its not the drivers that get it bad, its all the people on the side of the road watching.
