First time build, have a few questions.

My friend and his dad are helping me build a new rig. For my friend and I, its our first time attempting to build a computer, and we consult his dad from time to time as he knows what he's doing. All the hardware came two days ago and we started installing things.

Specs:
Case and PSU- Antec SLK3800B
Motherboard- Abit Kn8 ultra
Processor- AMD 64 X2 3800+
RAM- 1GB Corsair PC3200 DDR
Hard Drive- Seagate Barracuda 160gb SATA 2
Video Card- SAPPHIRE Radeon X850XT 256MB
Sound Card- Creative Sound Blaster SB0570 Audigy SE

That's all the parts I can think off the top of my head

After finishing installing all the hardware last night, I decided to take the computer home until tomorrow. My friends dad said he would help me set up the BIOS and installing drivers and such, but I wanted to see if I could just turn the computer on (wasn't expecting anything but a BIOS menu or something). I attached all the appropiate cables but nothing happened when I applied pressure to the power button. Are there switches inside the case I should be turning on to make the actual system turn on? I know the power supply switch is turned on, but other than that I'm in the dark. Or maybe there's something wrong inside the computer/something I didn't attach properly? Maybe I applied the thermal paste to the processor wrong (I did some in depth research on that so I hope not)?

Any insight/suggestions as to what might be going on would be greatly appreciated. Keep in mind I'm taking the rig back to said friend's house tomorrow but I just wanted to enlighten myself.

is the small light on the m/b glowing
when you press the power button,do the fans turn at all
if you just touch the 2 pins the wires from the power button connect to on the m/b with a small screwdriver does it boot up
it is easy to get these wires on the wrong pins double check them
reset the cmos
could be a standoff in the wrong position causeing the m/b to short to the backing plate
also check if there is a 115v and 230v slide switch on the back that it is set to the correct voltage

Hi,

To start, a few things to check:

>ATX 20 or 24 connector plugged in.

>12 volt Molex (square little plug - 4 prong) connected to motherboard.

>Heatsink Fan connected to motherboard.

>Off/On switch (2 wire) connected to front panel header in proper place.

>Switch on back of power supply turned ON and not OFF.

>CMOS jumper set in run position (most come from factory that way)

>Make sure you have only one motherboard standoff for each hole in the board and they are screwed in to each post.

>Make sure your Heatsink is clamped clear down and snapped in, that can be a job sometimes to get them down properly.

Check those areas and post back with questions/concerns.

Note: Also, tell us if any fans come on or the motherboard light comes on inside the case.

Addendum: Darn, that dai types much faster than I do....maybe next time I can be quicker, but you need to follow his directions,

Ok fans are running, but the power supply fan dosen't seem to be. I'm formatting the drive now. As this is my first build...using the parts list above can someone tell me which drivers I need to install and where I can find them?

the power supply fan may be one of the ones that only start when needed
install windows and then run your m/b cd setup
and then work out what others you need

I don't know where/can't find my modem drivers are. Is there anyway I can download these drivers and burn them to a CD? I have a Motorola SB5120 Cable Modem (comcast is my provider). Thanks, and yes I'm trying to get that app to detect all my drivers.

Was just linking you to product info/downloads.
When I had a usb broadband modem I had to install drivers.
The USB drivers should be on the product cd-rom.

But if you are using the ethernet part of the modem, you will just need to install the ethernet adapter drivers from your motherboard CD.
