Opinions on this Rig

Guys,

I am likely in the market for a new machine. I have occasionally upgraded my old (circa 2000) 900 MHz AMD Compaq and it appears to be failing. I came across [http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&NoMapp=0]THIS KIT[/url] and am wondering what y'all think. I figure I can use some of the more recent components (DVD RW, HD's, NIC, key board, etc.). Pricing it out with Win XP Pro and 1G of PC3200 = $350.

I know the power supply is below what is normally recommended but again, given my use, is that really a concern?

My needs are very basic. The only game I ever play (and that only rarely) is Slient Hunter III. I mostly just use it for Web/Email and mod-ing TSF of course. I might do some basic photoshop but nothing too strenuous. I rarely have more than one or two aps open - old habits die hard.

Opinions???

I built my last desktop from Tiger Direct kits like this one. Did have to replace the power supply after about 2 years.
This looks like a good build for a great price. Should be overkill for the apps you use.

Sounds like a hellva deal for the money! even if you do have to cough up for another PSU ina year or so; it certainly wont kill that deal !! I have paid that sticker price for video cards before !

Hi,

I had a basic unit much like that about three years ago for a spare computer and ran it with a little 300 watt enlight power supply. It never mssed a beat during the couple of years that I had it.

If you don't get caught up into the exotic video card craze or become a game junkie, it should serve the purpose for you. Sounds like a very good cost factor for what you are getting.

Great value. I use a socket 754 version of that CPU in one of my systems - good CPU. I've played Oblivion at medium detail with that CPU, so you can be sure it will handle all the things you want to do with it.

The 350W is a little low for my likings, but should be fine.
