DVD Burner/Rom problems

I have a Dell PC with a 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4, 1024 MB of Ram, and a Soundblaster live 24bit sound card. About a year ago I bought a DVD rom for my PC, and I installed it the way it was supposed to be installed, in my expansion bay, But when I played dvds the audio and video was slowed down for some reason. It had a lot of cracking and popping, and the voices kind of sounded like robots, if that makes sense. Well, I thought it was the dvd rom, but I just dealt with the prob, since the rom works fine as far as Data is concerned, I could use it to play games etc... But yesterday i bought a DVD Burner, and it does the same thing. Its more than a coincidence I think so I'm pretty sure its the Computer. When I copy a DVD to the hard drive and play it, it plays fine. I need to know what I can do to fix this problem. Not only do dvds play choppy, but the burner burns very slowly, its a 16x, and it takes about an hour and a half. I have a friend with an 8x, and his only takes maybe 45 minutes. Can anyone help??? Thanks

Hi Branman700, and welcome to TSF!

The first thing that jumps to mind is, did you plug the ribbon cable for the DVD ROM into the same slot on the motherboard? Did you use the same cable? And are you using the same media?

As for the slow burning, how much data are you trying to burn? The burn time is not only determined by the burn speed, but the amount of data being burnt.

Also, check Device Manager for any yellow alerts.

Well, When I opened the computer there was one empty bay, so I hooked everything up accordingly, there was only one empty ribbon cable available, the other is hooked to my cd burner that came with the computer. Device manager has no yellow alerts, it says all is working the way it should. I checked the task manager while I was playing a dvd, and my system usage is at 99-100%. I feel that has a lot to do with the lag in burning and playing things. Why would a dvd burner be sucking up so much memory? As far as the amount of data, we'll say a GB take probably 45 minutes. AND the computer is lagged to it's max.

Try swapping the ribbon cable thats connected to the CD player with the DVD player and see if the DVD player works.
