XP wont detect my Floppy drive!
Hi,
I know floppy drives are... well, rubbish; but I have an amount of data I'd like to copy from floppies, to my hard drive. Unfortunately, since I first received my pc (from a pc builder on ebay), the floppy drive doesn't appear in 'My Computer' or Device Manager or anything. A reference in made to it in the bios (I think), but windows doesnt seem to know its there. In device manager, a standard floppy drive controller is present, but no drive. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? Thanks Matt |

Have you checked it's plugged in securely, there should be a small 4 pin power cable and a ribbon cable in the back of it. Check the red stripe along the edge of the ribbon cable is closest to you as you look into the computer.

Hi,
Most common floppy error, the ribbon cable is put on upside down. I think that is where MunkyPhil is going with his suggestion. Unforunately, it is also quite common of them to up and die suddenly, but they are at least reasonably priced. Oh, the majority of techs I know do keep floppy drives on their personal machines although they don't use them much. Just a good thing to have around for that one time you need it.
