freinds old computer is not working

a friend of mine's computer is not working she doesn't know the specs of her computer the problem is:

For quite a while, the mouse has been going wacko every now and then. A while later, a few days ago the monitor started flickering until it shut off completely. Then the mouse started getting worse. So bad that I restarted it like I normally do. It didn't work, so I got frustrated and shut down the system. When I came back from a walk, it wouldn't start up. In that time frame, I had installed a new monitor and tried two new mice.

what should she do?

Hard to say for sure from what you have told us, but it sounds like the power supply.

If you take the side of your friend's case off you should see the power supply at the top of the case at the back, tell us what it says on it, i.e. wattage. If you know somebody with another computer take the power supply out of that and try it in your machine. Make sure the wattage of the new supply is greater than the old, if it works then you've probably found your problem. However, without knowing your friend's spec it's hard to make a good judgement so the better the computer it comes from the more confident you can be. You really should find out though. Try to find out more in general about the computer too, look for anything on the motherboard - model/manufacturer, how many stick of RAM you have, anything could be useful.

If you do manage to boot right click on my computer and click properties, a basic specification can be found there. Even better would be the system summary you can get by clicking the System Info... button in the About... window you get to from the help menu of all Microsoft Office applications.

Post back if you have more questions.

Hmm, I can see how that poses a problem, this may take a little longer to resolve than normal. If you can relay the information to her then that's a start. We're always here if you need further questions answering.
