need to transfer files to new computer

Hi
Just purchased a new compaq presario sr1810nx to replace my compaq presario 5452. My problem is that the
old computer cd-rom doesn't work and when I go to startup the old computer it automatically goes into safe mode. I have read that files can be transfered by using a null serial cable attached to each computers com-port.Is there anyway that the files can be transfered while in the safe mode? Any suggestion will be tried.

You should just be able to transfer it using an ethiernet cable.
Why does it go into safe mode anyway?

I agree, ethernet is the best option. But you might not be able to do that from safe mode, as the network card might not have its driver loaded in safe mode. Repeatedly press F8 right before windows is about to load to get into boot options, and select start up normally. Once you boot into windows, you will have to share the hard disk to view it on the other computer.

Start>Run>MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
On the BOOT.INI tab, Uncheck the "/SAFEBOOT" option, click OK and restart

Instead of normal, select "safe mode with network support" to load minimal drivers and driver for network card in case there's another driver conflict

Is it possible that your cd doesn't work because you are automatically starting in safe mode (software or drivers not being loaded) You might want to try "Normal startup" under the general tab of msconfig (same as thematt, different permanent way)
