Have a look in device manager, the manufacturer and/or model number should be there. Google the details and it shoud come up. Another place to look is in the help menu of any MS Office application. Go to About (Application) and click on System Information. Have a look for components or hardware and the info should be there.

no brand name on cdrw
thanks Munky Phil and Terrister. i've tried many programs including aida 32 which showed a blank(but showed info on cdrom drive). dev. man. shows what i haave entered(6x4x6 if anything). bottom of unit reads-model no.: 6406EU-192 OCTOBER 2001 and a ser. no. as best as i can tell it needs ecc.exe flash , may be acer or benq or ???. nobody will acknowledge it or admit it is theirs.cant install because it freezes pc when turned on! flash file asks if i want to flash cdrom drive(seen by os, but no cdrw}! I tried uninstalling drivers with maybe correct floppy, but still freezes when turned on. acer and benq have no listing of my mod. num. in records, yet info from drv.guide shows acer and benq as being possibly involved. ha ha. more ideas would be appreciated thanks. ron (not sure of how to continue thread ideas-hope this is in correct order.)

thanks again Terrister and Whosdat. a few ideas: itseems like when i got unit-it was advertized as a 4x4x6, but opening it i found it was a 6x4x6! The numbers were from the sticker on bottom of metal enclosure for drive. Not the paper/cardboard box. I will try acer and archives.thanks again. ron

no name on cdrw
well, i have solved the mistery and maybe can pass on some help for you haveing problems getting info about devices and products. what you want to do is do a "google web search". fill in the UPC numbers (by the vert. lines)-the amount of info returned is unbelieveable! what you get is an "item record" from the upc database.lots of info, links, ideas, plus you get a chance to join another good organazatioin. btw it is an acer. aileronron

one other idea is going to driverguide.com and looking it up there.. they have drivers for lots of stuff, and have weird brands that aren't well known... That site's helped me when I've been looking for drivers for stuff with no brand name
Driverguide Search wizard
