P4P800 Delux and what I learned

I recently built my first computer here are the parts.
P4P800 Delux
Intel 2.8 GHz P4 w/hyperthreading
Antec Overture case with true power 380w
ASUS GEFORCE 9250 Magic
Geil PC3200 RAM 1 gig
Seagate 120 gig ultra IDE 8 meg cache
3.5" floppy, CDRW, etc.
Thermaltake Spark 5 Fan and HS.
Logitech Cordless MX Duo

Okay to start I assembled all parts as instructed and learned a few things. The Thermaltake has paste on bottom but I bought Antec Silver and used it instead. Its fiddly putting on the paste. The Antec/Truepower has thermal fan control and the P4P800 also has fan control. Plug the single yellow wire from the case fan with a three pin connector on it to the mobo CHA fan plug. There was no instruction in the Antec lit. that said what this wire was for but I called and got the skinny. Wires supplied by Antec are plenty long enough in this set-up. On first start-up the BIOS did not detect the HD or the Memorex CDRW but once started it showed up in Setup. I was able to setup the HD using the SEAGATE utility and put WIN XP on the HD. Then learned from this forum that I needed the newest BIOS and flashed it according to instructions seen here. New Bios = no problem. Load all drivers and then do it again for the graphics card. The 3COM LOM 3C940 driver is needed and the 1394 connection is not really doing anything. The Logitech itouch system does not recognize the Intervideo WINRIP that came witht the graphics card. I e-mailed Logitech and will hopefully get an answer soon. The Overture case is quite and looks good. More than enough USB's for me. Onboard sound is lousy and may need powered speakers in a desk-top arrangement. Next phase of this project is to add a DVD, connect to the 42" TV, and surround sound. This case should look good with all the other AV equipment on the shelf. No more desk top and a sweet looking and working internet horse on the TV with the cordless mouse and KB on the coffee table.

Any recomendations on a video card that will allow pic in pic or dual screen so that I can run office apps while viewing a DVD?

I agree the grease application is fiddly & messy, but the good thing is you will never need to worry that your heatsink isn't getting all possible heat transferred to it.

I also agree that the 1394 connection isn't doing anything. I've disabled mine but haven't been able to get completely rid of it.

Lack of device detection by the BIOS didn't make sense to me, unless your devices were attached to the VIA PRI/SEC_RAID1 port. Those indeed might not be detected without the aid of extra drivers installed at the F6 reminder. But somehow you got it sorted out.
