P4P800 E-Deluxe Fan question
hey all,
Got a question for you that I have searched for but not been able to find a good answer to. Long story short here is I have a 120mm case fan in my system that is way loud. I have it plugged into the pwr_fan connector on the board. What I would like to know is if there is any software available to control this fan based on the temp in the box. It is running full speed all the time right now and it really really doesnt need to be. I know the easiest solution would be to go drop another 10-15 bucks on a quieter fan, but i would rather do this free. (otherwise my wife gives me a hard time about it I know, sad.)Anyway. I have read about the Q-Fan thing that comes with the board, but i didnt know what setting i would want to put it at or wether it will adjust the fan speed based on the temp or not. Anybody help me out here? Thanks. |

Hi, the Q-fan works on system load (cpu) and it does seem to work, I used it for awhile but found that having 3 wd hard drives was the source of my noise, not my fans (with the possible exception of 2 front fans).
just play with the q-fan ratio settings until you get a balance between noise and temp. btw I beleive the q-fan only works on the cpu fan header.

Thanks for the reply.
That would be a bummer if it only works for the cpu fan. Anyone else know if that is right or not? If that is right, anyone know of any other software controllers before I go out and find a new fan. oh, by the way, I was only running one HD when i installed the fan and that was the only thing that changed in the system and the noise went way up. So I know in my situation that that is the problem. That plus the fact that I kinda got screwed into taking this fan in the end when i knew from the beginning it would be loud. Thanks. |

Dai,
Thanks for replying. That was an interesting article. If I had money to drop on stuff like that I just might. But for the moment, if there is not a workable software solution I am much more likely to go with a fan with a sensor coltrol of its own, such as this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811999145 rather than drop much more money. Any other ideas? Thanks again. Last edited by twayne; 04-11-2006 at 12:20 PM. |

Hello: not that its going to change your noise level; but you have your fan connected to the wrong spot on the mobo. Pwr/fan is suppose to be reserved for the power supply units fan connection ?????? the cha fan is the chassis fan connector ???

linderman,
my power supply provides its own power to its fan. I have an 80mm fan on the front side of my case plugged into the chassis_fan connector. I downloaded the Speedfan program and installed it last night. It looks like it has the ability to control fans but it didnt seem to change anything to me. Does anyone konw how to use it, or if it can be used for controlling fan speed with this Mobo? thanks again. |

just a quick follow up though. why in the world would a PS require power from the mobo to run its fan? Seems kinda wasteful to output the power to the mobo only ot have to draw it back in to run its own internal fan doesnt it??

OK guys. thanks for the responses. I think I am gonna play with Speedfan for a while and if it doesnt do what i need i will see what else I can find.
just FYI, I have an Ultra 500W X-Connect modular PS and as far as I know it doesnt have a cable to connect to the MOBO for fan power. At least, I havent connected one specifically for that and the fan runs, so i can only assume that its powered internally. ANyway. Thanks for the help. |
