Pc will not turn on
Hello I have an issue with my pc where it will not turn on. The lights on my motherboard light up and i get a post message on the post screen (mobo lcd) saying "f._" the _ space is blank. I shut it down last night after a lock up and i must have pushed the restart rather then shutdown icon, i stoped it mid boot out of fustration and shut it off using nthe front switch (i know this was a bad move by me but i was angry at the time).
I have tested the psu and found it was working fine when i used another pc or shorted a geen and black wire. I also cleared the cmos, removed battery, reseted psu plugs, checked connections, removed and reseated the video card and memory. I have checked my power switch and it works and i have used a screw driver to tap the 2 pins used for startup switch. Used 2 diffrent PSUs to test. My specs are. an8 sli fatal1ty mobo guru panel antec smartpower 500 amd 64 3000 crucial performance memory 7800 gtx 256 lian li pc 1000 raptor 70 gig 2 x samsung dvd-rws Last edited by Tehk; 03-17-2006 at 07:28 PM. |

Hi,
First thing to try is to clear the CMOS and see if that helps. Some times when you shut down in mid-boot, that can corrupt the BIOS strartup options so one must go back to the system default. Post back and let us know if that helped.

Hi,
I don't know how I missed your verbal about clearning the CMOS, but I did. Sorry for the mistake. (going to my room to clean my glasses) Tell us more, has this computer worked before with no problem and if so, how long? What lights come on and stay on? Which ones come on and go out? Do all the fans spin? Any beeps, like does it sound like it posts?

The computer has run fine since i built it almost 2 years ago.
When i flip the power supply switch the mobo power lighst come on and and a post lcd message displays a "_.3" for a second then a "f._" abit forums suggested my POST lcd was blown out since "8.3" is the POST code for psu ready. When i push the on button or use a crew driver to manually cros them i get nothing. No sounds, no fans, and no change in lights on the mobo. If the post display is freaking out and it does mean to say 8.3 then i think i might have a blown mobo. If that was the case what else could be blown? A mobo is in my price range but a cpu and new memory is not. A new computer is out of the question so i am kind of up in the air. |

Hi,
Try it with only one stick of memory and if that does not work, switch to the other stick and try it. Check your manual for the proper slot for only one stick. when you say the power supply switch, which one do you mean? I mean are you saying the switch on the front of the case? Surely you aren't talking about the 110 - 220 (120-240) switch on the back of the power supply? Just clarify for me. I guess I don't understand how you can get it to run with the switch (don't know which one), but the On/Off post shorting does not work. That just does not add up for me. Not saying that is not what is happening, but seems sure strange. Are all fans running and keep rinning when you get it to stay on? Post back

The switch i am speaking of is the I/O (power on/off to psu, not the 120/240). So when i flip the switch the lights come to the mobo and the POST screen on the mobo displaying as i said before. Last edited by Tehk; 03-18-2006 at 05:56 PM. |

Hi,
Narrow it clear down. Remove all components except: The motherboard ATX Power connector 12 volt square molex connected to the motherboard Heatsink and Fan on CPU with fan plugged into motherboard One stick of ram as specified in your manual. (the slot is important) The video card in the slot w/ power connector (if one) connected to it. Monitor Keyboard and mouse On/off wires connected to front panel header Nothing else connected including: No drives of any kind No PCI cards of any kind No cables except as specified earlier No wires on front panel header except the off/on as notes earlier Try it and see what happens. If that does not make it come up, then take away the keyboard and mouse and try it. If you get nowhere, take out in addition the Video card and monitor. If that does not give results, take out all memory and see if it beeps you. That should narrow it down quite a bit...............report back. Oh, how old is your power supply? Do you have another you could try? Post back

Hi,
That is correct. The first try, leave that card in and see if you get anything.

touch the 2 pins on the m/b with a paper clip or something similar that the case switch connects to,it may be a faulty switch if no fans are starting

Hi,
If you try what dai suggested and that does not work, double check the cpu fan is making good contact with the motherboard connector. It must be plugged in there and make good contact. Also, double check your heatsink to make sure it is clamped down there pretty darn tight.
