Would this be worthwhile

Would the improvement be worthwhile to change from a 2.66 to a 3.0 cpu?

You might notice a slight improvement. Plus you can take advantage of the Hyperthreading technology.

If you are going to buy a new cpu and replace it with the 2.6 one that you have I would say save your money. Or go up to 3.4 as the price difference is not that drastic.

several factors

is the 2.6 a 533mhz FSB ????? and you want to upgrade to a 3.0mhz 800 mhz FSB ?????? most likely you would need to change your mobo unless you have a 800mhz capable mobo ??????

I saw several used 3.2 Notherwood processors on ebay for approximately $150.00 that would make a really decent upgrade IF you have the matched sticks of PC3200 to get you into a dual channel configuration.

best to give us your mobo model and ram stick models to get a final vote ?????

Hi,

The difference between the 2.66 and the 3.0 are negligible in my opinion. Then, as mentioned you have to deal with having the 533 vs. 800 fsb unless yours is already capable. Tell you what, the 2.66 is pretty darn good if you were to overclock some, so that might be a way to get better performance without the cost of the upgrade. Like PurpleSky mentioned, you would need to go to the 3.4 to make it worth very much expense. The problem that I see is you will be paying money for the same technology (abiet a little better) when you could save and move up later.

I didn't think it would be worthwhile changing the cpu. That's why I asked. The mobo only supports 533fsb. It looks as if I really want to see an improvement, the mobo would also need to be changed.

Tumble and other are very correct !! you are not going to see but a slight improvement going from a 2.6 to a 3.0 on the same board especially

now if you were comparing your mobo and 2.6 against a 800mhz mobo runnign say a 3.2 ghz cpu in dual channel mode there would be better than a slight improvement >>>> however if I showed you the speed improvement ahead of time >>>> I really doubt I could pull the $600.00 out of you hand it would cost you to upgrade to that spec. you would need

800 mhz mobo (asus,abit, msi) $100.00
3.2ghz intel socket 478 $250.00
2 x 512 matched ram sticks 80.00
ATI video card 9800 pro AGP (used)85.00
new PSU to run a power hog 75.00 antec SP-500

as suggested by the others >>>> add more ram to yours >>> maybe some overclocking dont spend any big bucks upgrading for what little improvement you will see >>>>> unless $600.00 is reasonable to you ??????

I agree if you're thinking about upgrading your processor you should save up for a dual core and get a new motherboard. You can probably get a nice dual core 2.8 with 800fsb and motherboard for about $400.
