Strange Problem with Hard Disk

Hello,

I am fixing a PC for someone and have run into a strange problem. The PC was dead when given to me, so I replaced the PSU and now it powers up ok. However, it will not post if the Hard Disk is attached to any of the IDE channels, it gets to the end of the memory check and hangs. I can boot a livecd version of linux from the CD rom drives on either IDE channel with no problem. The Hard Disk is set to Cable Select (which is how it was when I received it, and I assume how it was from the factory). I cannot get to BIOS setup with the Hard Disk connected. I have tried the following:

Verified the Hard Disk Works fine by putting it in another PC
Tried another known good IDE cable with no success
Altered the boot order in the BIOS
Booted successfully from CD roms on both IDE channels.

Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Chris.

Try setting the drive to master and hooking it to the end
of the data cable on the primary IDE channel by itself.
