RAM Increase

I want to increase the Ram in my computer from 256 to 512. Can't I just pull the Ram chip out of the board, get a type and number off of it, search for the same 256 chip and add it next to the other one in the board?

Any help is apperciated...Thanks

First off, you can search for the same 256 ram chip or something similar to it provided that your motherboard can support it or you can find one 512 chip and snapped it in. Just make sure you know that if its SIMM/DIMM/SD/RD
