asus p4s800d-x, issues

i just installed a asus p4s800d-x mother board socket 478, pentium 4, 3.0gighertz, 800mhtz fronside bus, I have two hard drives installed, dvd burner, cdburner, 3 ram chips (256 each) pc3200 ddr, 400mhz. supports hyperthreading. when i first boot up i get an amibios code beep. 1 long and 2 short. this indicates video card issues. I replaced the video card (pci) and it does the same thing. However it will boot after the second reboot. then i get an overclock failed error, press f1 to enter setup or f2 to accept default settings. My computer is not overclocked. i accept default settings and reboot and i get the video audio error beep again. I then reboot and get no error accept the one about overclocking failed. I am thinking maybe my power supply is having voltage problems. it is an atx 420watts 12 volts. plenty of power. Any ideas. i can't seem to get rid of that overclocking warning or that audio code warning ... oh i haven't run the motherboard cd that came with it yet, because i don't have the operating system installed yet. should i do that first?

My System

I would looking into swapping the PSU / 420 watts is not really "plenty" of power = especially if the PSU is a generic or low quality one.

I would look towards an Antec or Enermax of atleast 500 watts >>> 550 is better the majority (85%) of case combo deals come with a generic quality PSU which can not take a good load. Remember 70% of the rated 420 is all your PSU can produce at full load or equal to 323 watts !!! Even the highest quality PSU's boast about only 75% efficiency. Your system requires atleast 300 amps at full load espcially if you have two hard drives !!
'
The other good possibility is a memory mismatch >>> thats why its best to install memory in like dual channel kits of like specs

try running your computer with a matched pair of memory modules if you have a matched pair. it could very well be the third stick is causing your trouble. Make sure you memory sticks are listed on the memory makers website as bing tested for YOUR motherboard model.

Your system will run faster with 2 matched sticks of 256 (dual channel kit) than it will with three sticks of 256 >>>> with a matched pair the mobo will run in dual channel mode which doubles the speed and ability of your ram to process data / when you install three sticks >>> your mobo will run in single channel mode = slooooower

if your sticks are of diff CAS latency that will also cause you troubles

let us know how you progress & any additional info youmay learn while testing

try running memtest (free & in my signature) if you are able to get past a bios screen

regards

joe

Try upgrading your BIOS to the latest beta release

I had the same problem with the "Overclocking Failed!" message on my P4S800D-X and updated the BIOS to the latest beta: 1006.002 (build date is from June 2006, which is much newer than the 1005 release). Also, make sure to clear the CMOS with the jumper after flashing the BIOS.

I had to flash my Asus P4C when I first got it for similar reasons.

A P4 is a hungry beast, if you are using a generic power supply I would consider replacing it with a good quality PSU as Linderman suggested. The generics will work sometimes but can cause problems and do not last long when the PC is under load. If the PSU goes bad it could take other components with it.
