add registered or unregistered RAM to 3rd slot in Asus K8V SE deluxe MB?

So currently I have 2x512mb Corsair XMS DDR 400 (pretty sure it is unregistered) and I want to put a 1GB stick in my 3rd slot, but I am not sure if it needs to be registered or unregistered RAM. I have read that some MBs will only take unregistered ram in the first 2 slots but that the third and/or fourth slot needs to be registered, but that you cannot mix unregistered and registered.Anyone know? Thanks!

Hi,

Just some friendly bits of advice.

Don't mix registered and unregistered ram.

Don't mix different sizes of Ram.

Don't mix different speeds (latency)of ram.

Don't mix any Ram that does not sell as matched pairs of ram.

Don't put any Ram in a motherboard that is not on your board's QVL chart.

My recommendation if you want two gigs of ram. Buy a matched pair and sell your two sticks of 512 to someone who wants only one gig of ram.

That is my opinion and I am sure you did not want to hear this, but that is the way it is if you want your computer to work at top efficiency.

Thanks for the tips :) so no 1GB stick in the third slot even if it's unregistered and the same speed? Is there a point to having the third slot in the mb?

Hi,

I have given you my best advice on mixing ram for optimal performance of your computer. My advice (I reread it), may have given you the impression that it would never work and that is simply not the case in all instances. That is certainly not the case. The advice I gave you is the best for no hastle operation.

It might work if you:

1) You make sure the latency is the same.

2) The speed is the same.

3) The chip is on your QVL list for your motherboard.

4) The brand name is the same (in most cases)

Some times it works, some times it does not. I would suggest you give it a try and see if it works, because some get lucky and it does work for them. If you put it in (won't hurt to try) and it works, then go for it.

I think the main thing about the third slot is that some have the exact same chips like 3 - 512 chips and that way they can have more than one gig of ram.

So, give it a try and see what happens and let me know if you were successful. Good Luck..
