Sound stop, CMOS checksum error & system freeze

My PC has been running fine for the past 2 years until recently when the on-board sound(Realtek AC'97 Audio) gave problem. It was distorted or scratchy. After re-installing the driver with no success, we disabled the on-board sound chip in the bios and added a newly purchased Creative 24-bit Live! card. It works for a few days and then we ran into other problems.

1. The sound from Creative card stop after using for ~2mins.
2. PC hang
3. On bootup, notice error "CMOS checksum error. Defaults loaded".
4. In the CMOS health check, DDR25V sometime show "Fail" but most of time it shows OK.
5. While, pressing up or down the CMOS options on the main menu, the system freeze.

Below were the steps that we've done but problems still persist
1. Load Fail-Safe Defaults
2. Replace motherboard battery. We removed the old battery and waited ~30sec before placing the new battery to clear the CMOS settings.
3. Remove Creative sound card.

Appreciate your advise on this issue.

Did you try the card in another slot? I know my SB live was very picky on which slot I put it in. The first PCI slot shares with the AGP slot, so dont use that one. Did you check the event viewer to see what errors you were getting. Visit Gigabyte and Creatives site for help.

My System

Sounds likee one of your memory modules is failing....since the computer is freezing while you are looking at the bios. I would try to isoltae which one is bad by trying them individually to see which one causes the hang up. Gardenz is right, I would look in your mobo manual and find out which pci slot is NOT shared and place the Audigy card in that one. Since you didn't list what psu you have, I hope you have a decent one, as it could be the root cause of all your woes as well.

Thanks bobbing & twajetmech for your advise.

Look like a BIOS issue that is causing some of the problems. I've flashed the bios to the latest Ver F11, downloaded from GigaByte site.

Now, no more "CMOS checksum error" and it does not freeze in the CMOS setup screen and on my XP.

The only issue left is the on-board sound. Playing music is ok but vocal was scratchy. Strange!

Will disable the on-board sound and put back the Creative 24-bit Live! card. Will see if I'm still facing the sound stop after ~2min.

After putting back the creative sound card, sound stop after 2mins & PC hung.

Finally, we replaced the GigaByte motherboard with a newly purchased MSI 865PE motherboard. Problem resolved. System & Creative sound card has been working fine.

Thank you.
