How to know a northwood from prescott

Hello folks

I have a big red L plate on my computer.

I really want to know how to identify a prescott from a northwood processor.

1. Are there any differences externally?

2. Any specs to look for?.

3. And while running in the machine, is there a way of knowing?

4. And what is micron and nm??

Please enlighten a confused learner.

Thanks a million

Download and install Everest Home Edition from Lavalys (free)

It will give a complete system inventory and other cool things.

Enjoy,

CPU-Z will tell you what you need to know on the first page and like jflan said, Everest will give you heaping gobs of interesting info.

If you have a heat column rising above your computer then you're running a Prescott (only partly joking).

That's the size of the transistor process used to create the chips. Northwoods are 130 nm and Prescotts are 90nm. Usually smaller process technology means faster and cooler but but in the Prescott's case it's more of a mixed bag.

Both Asus P4P800 SE and Asus P4v800-X claim Prescott support. 800MHz Front Side Bus Northwoods are pretty hard to get these days although some are available. My Northwood stays nice and cool (relative to a Prescott). Just get the retail version of the Prescott and you'll get a heatsink which will cool it just fine. Intel includes good heatsinks with their CPUs. You only need after-market heatsinks if you intend to overclock.
