Fried CPU?
Okay, approx one month ago, i built my friend a computer. A couple of days ago, he left it in his car in the heat (Shame on him) and it slammed up against his car when he turned a corner. He brought it over to me to if I could fix it. I thought it was the motherboard because I thought the he fried it. He said it was really hot in there.
We went and got a new motherboard. I installed it and it still didn't turn on. Okay, so it wasnt the motherboard. I was then starting to think it was the case (PSU worked. Tested it in mine) Turns out, after all that, it was a faulty power cord. Yeah, I feel stupid :\ Now my problem is, when I removed the fan and heatsink the first time, the CPU was stuck to the thermal paste stuff on the bottom of the heatsink. (It was on there good) I was able to get it off, but I think its history. I tried it in both motherboards and I'm not getting any video. Do you think the CPU is fried? Thanks :) Specs: AMD Athlon 64 1800+ Socket 754 MSI K8MM-V Motherboard 512MB Kingston Hyper-x RAM Onboard video and audio |

Well maybe its just me but things seem a bit sketchy when it comes to what troubleshooting steps you already took and what exactly is working and what isnt.
Serious opinion though - the CPU didnt fry because the PC was left in a hot car. Even if it was 150 degrees F in the car the CPU would still be ok. I'd look into damaged/ bent pins when you pulled the CPU out of the socket together with the HSF - or maybe the mobo got cracked when the PC got slammed around. All depends on how bad it was and how things were mounted. Have you tried setting everything up out of the case yet - making sure things are seated properly ?

The motherboard thats in there now is the new one so I dont think theres anything wrong with it.
I havent set everything up yet. I just put the board in the case and gave it power to see if I'd get any video output. I'll try that and see if it works. My next guess would be the Cmos |

Yes if you can get some tweezers and carefully straighten them out the CPU will probably still work.

Dangit, I guess he'll just have to buy a new one then. It was only $130.
Well, at least I learned the motherboard isn't always the problem. I can't believe I didnt think of the power cord :\ Thanks for your help guys. One more question, is the CPU suppose to get stuck to the heat sink? Last edited by TheKolkster; 06-17-2005 at 02:24 PM. |

It's not uncommon for that to happen, especially if the CPU is on for extended periods of time. I wouldn't be surprised if the one in my server was fused permanently. :p A little twist will often split the two safely.
