Connection between graphics corruption and motherboard chipset temperature?
I didn't really know which forum to put this in, but here it is.
Recently my computer started having problems rendering some of the 3d games that used to run just fine. In some games the textrues would be discolored o r corrupted (Guild Wars) and in other games the primary problem was that som e of the polygons were grossly distended filling half the screen but still a nchored within the game universe(Prince of Persia:Warrior Within). For regul ar desktop applications, the computer seems to run fine. The errors for the 3D games, seem to accumulate over time. The first ten seconds of gameplay ar e alright, but as time progresses, the game becomes unplayable before five m inutes is up. So, suspecting that my video card might be malfunctioning, I open up the case and take a look at the scenerio. The only thing that I notice which is amis is that fan that covers the motherboard chipset no longer runs. I don't know the exact function of the chipset on the motherboard so I am wondering if (due to a malfunctioning fan) weather it is possible for an overheating or burnt out motherboard chip to be responsible for my graphics corruption? If it isn't the motherboard/chipset am I safe in assuming that something has gone wrong with my graphics card? Motherboard: ABit NF7S v.2 Graphics card: Radeon 9800 Pro CPU: AMD 2800+ Motherboard chipset: nForce2 Ultra 400 |

i agree with dai on this, it probably hasn't died, but you are possibly seeing errors because of overheating.
this fan is CRUCIAL on some machines, depending on the rest of the configuration and how you use the machine. and with it getting worse like that, and then getting terrible after a few mins, that sounds kind of like it would be consistent with the bridge heating up. although i'm not sure that this fan is causing the problem, when working on something, it's a good idea to fix the things that are obviously wrong with it first. you might also try running speedfan on it, it might be able to see this chip's temp. and you can set speedfan up to make a log, so you can go back after you are done testing and see what the temp was doing, and compare it to what the screen looked like.
