I just bought an ASUS p4p800e Deluxe board with realtek audio AC97, so far everything is fine, but im having a BIG problem with audio.
No matter what driver i use, if i turn up the volume (master/front, only using stereo headphones/speakers) i hear some high frequency noise or beep sound, it is very anoying.
Looks like an 56kpps modem trying to connect.
i disconnect everything from my pc, also i changed the power case and the motherboard and the noise persists.

What should i do now?
Is this a commom problem?
thanks

...There are many posts elsewhere on this site regarding the onboard sound (AC'97) and some people have had so many problems with this they have just disabled it in the bios and bought a soundcard.

The forum you are on now is purely about the SATA/ICH5r chipset conflict. Try posting your problem elsewhere on the site. You'll be very surprised at what people will come up with for you. Or they might just say what I said above

Hope this helps

Regarding EG_Nazgul post

Thats pretty much what I found out. I have Media center with SP2 and, from what I've heard, that works better than XP home edition. But it still doesnt work.

Here is something else I found out which proves it is the ICH5r chipset.
I installed XP MCE SP2 on my new 200gb IDE drive. Got everything working 100%. Installed all drivers and tested the machine.

Now the interesting part.... I installed my SATA drive, formatted it and set it up as a secondary drive. Installed Grand theft Auto San andreas on IDE and on the SATA drive.
Ran it on IDE drive.....FINE
Ran it on SATA drive....Did EXACTLY the same thing as it did when I had just the SATA drive (Skipping, frame rate drops, sound errors, freezing)

Then tried MP3's on both drives, with the machine under load. IDE drive was fine, SATA drive did the same thing as before.

Also, a final note. All of my video files I had on my old machine were copied over my network to the SATA drive on my new machine when I first built it. So, when I got my new IDE drive working I copied my video files from the SATA drive to the IDE drive. I have now found out that the SATA drive has corupted those video files!!

This makes me think even more (about 90% now) that data on the SATA drive is degraded over time. This would also explain why my system went from fine to not working in a week.

And STILL nothing from ASUS about this!

Maybe we should all start a petition lol

Thumbs Up

Simon:

I have seen several threads now that posters have used a Sata PCI card and got a very stable system result. The cards are not that bad in price either $35.00 -$40.00 / I think these work great because they ahve their own bios just like a scsi adapter ! You can get around using the buggy ICH5R chip.

You have done a damn fine job of tracking down this problem though !

kudos

Well its that idea Joe or using the promise controller. Im not 100% sure at the moment.

What I really want to do is find out exactly whats causing the problem and make a lot of people out there really happy by fixing it. Its either something that can be fixed or just simply "forget NCQ".

I have a few ideas what "might" be causing it but i've yet to test them.

I will dump what ever I find on here. I might set up a new thread asking everyone to post their experences and findings with this problem.

What do you think Joe?

Regards

Monbart

Sounds like a worthwhile idea / sure are a pile of posters fighting the same problem. I am disappointed that Asus hasnt offered some suggestions or at the very least some aknowledgement of the problem.

regards

thought this is gonna help

I am using the same board. with Intel P4 3c 1G ram (2 512 dual channel)
2 X Western Digital SATA 160 G running RAID 0

I have been using this for at least 5 or 6 months without problem but since i found out i've made a big mistake (putting the RAID on Promise rather than FASTRAK which gives u more speed as it connect directly to the south bridge rather than sharing the PCI bus) on the initial setup, I have decided to reinstall everything and putting the RAID 0 on the FASTRAK.

So I went to Asus to check for new items like drivers and BIOS 1007 before I do anything.
( the default BIOS 1003 or below, cain't remember exactly)

so I flashed it with 1007 and see if it works. (that's before i switch to fastrak RAID) then I started to have problem with Windows locking up, BIOS setup resetting, Norton Ghost 2005 takes forever scanning for hardisk. Since I was going to reinstalling everything anyways, so I didn't try to fix the problem at all and backed up everything and install win XP sp 2 with the 2 SATA WD 160G on the FASTRAK RAID.

PROBLEM STILL EXIST even with fresh installed Win XP SP2 and this really p*ssed me off badly as I use it for music composition.

In conclusion, and taking your comments into account, I very much think that the new bios 1007 has a problem. and I should try and flash it back to the originally bios and have a go tonite~ the second thing I am going to try is to disable the onboard sound card.

Hope this suggestion gonna help.

Sata

Well, it seems to me given the original problem posted here about the system being slow and all that. One little detail...you DO NOT need to install ANY drivers prior to windows setup with diskettes if you're not setting up a RAID array. That is the only time you need to install the Intel Accelerator Driver.
Try just plugging the drive in the southbridge and installing windows right off the bat.

a little correction of what I've said. the promise raid is actually called fastrak~ forget about the names... just plug your SATA HD to the ones that are next to the South Bridge which suppose to give you more speed (150Mhz / SATA Connection and 266Mhz from South Bridge to North compare to the PROMISE which only gives you 133 / port and sharing the PCI Bus to the North Bridge) <-- I hope this is correct and not misleading

Last nite i flashed it back to the BIOS which is included on the ASUS Disc and I am very happy with it now. the verson is 1001. the only funny thing about this bios is~ you will see your 2 SATA as third and fourth HD in BIOS not an ARRAY (RAID) and in boot section you will need to put third HD as one of the BOOT device. so far I am very happy~

P.S. I have uninstall Norton Ghost tho~ it just takes forever to boot as it scans all the HD on start up. suxxx! correct me if I am wrong!

Hello again everyone. I havent posted for a while but thought i would just let everyone know how everything now stands with regards to my machine.

After many MANY reformats and re installs, The SATA drive still doesnt like being master. My final setup is a Maxtor IDE drive as master and the SATA drive as slave. Im currently still using windows media center edition (with SP2). Im using the SATA drive as the recording device for MC. And so far (which has been about 6 months) no problems. However, one thing that I have noticed is that if I run a power hungry program like photoshop, it causes the SATA drive to respond like it did when i first used it (skipping, drive errors), however, if I use system restore as soon as it starts happening and put the machine back a day, it works fine again. Very odd indeed!

Also, the whole, SATA and ICH5r chipset doesnt like media center is a myth. I tried it and it did exactly the same thing.

I really wish this would clear up, but somehow i dont think this problem ever will.

Has anyone else found out anything new about this "little" problem since ive been away?

Speak to you all soon!!

Monbart

My thoughts are this I have the very same MB P4P800-E-Deluxe on the system that I built for my Mom and Dad and I put a 74GB WD Raptor (SATA)as there Primary and a 120 WD Cavier on the IDE port since it was from there Old Dell.
With NCQ there is no real benefit yet and from the very beginning you must use a MB that suporrts it to begin with, and all of the P4C and P4P boards from ASUS are original SATA 150 MBs nothing more. Maybe that is why ASUS isn't responding because the MB was never designed to use NCQ that is why they made the the P5P line of MB's

Besides A raptor is still way faster than a NCQ drive anyway

Monbart.

I could not read every post, too many... but is this SATA drive the only one you have tried? Maybe it's just a bad drive.

It is the only SATA drive I have tried. And I couldnt send the drive back. I know it would work if the drive was non NCQ. its a very known fact that NCQ drives do not work on the p4p800e deluxe.

Unless im proved wrong of course

Simon:

good to hear from you again !! I think your conclusion has proven to be right on the money !! All P4 -socket 478 asus boards see to be suffering the NCQ problem. The only cure is either a non-NCQ drive or Master=IDE

this is a sad reality >>>> and I think Asus owes it's customer base at least some sort of "note" about it. They refuse to aknowledge the problem head on >>> they feel they have solved the problem by releasing the P5 boards with the ICH-6 chipset !!

No as for me personally >>>>> NO MAXTORS FOR THIS DUDE

I would grab a raptor and enjoy the bigger speed boost from the 10,000 rpm drive speed anyway and kiss NCQ good-bye all at the same time >>>> the raptors are Sata 150 capable which should smoke your current sata drive ???

I think we can give up looking for an asus NCQ "fix" for these boards they have "moved" on !! :(

cheers

joe

I don't have time to read the whole thread, but noticed in your first post you say you installed drivers at F6. You are running your drive on SATA 1, and the Intel chip does not require the drivers. Installing them can actually degrade performance.

OOPS!!!! Didn't notice thread date.
