PC upgrade

I have a Dell 8200 series 2.0 processor, Bus speed is 400MHz, 768 PC 800 Ram, ATI 9600se card, the PC is going to be 3 years old in June and I've been upgrading it trying to keep up, when I bought this it was convienent I just called Dell and told them out I wanted and they sent it, but I over paid, so now I'm stuck, but with the little upgrades I did make and the way I keep it up its not a bad starter rig, so I called Dell and asked them if my motherboard would except a faster CPU, they said I could go up to 2.4 for $700 I'm not doing that, noway I could almost build another rig for that!

So is there any work around that I can do to upgrade the Processor to 3.0 or higher ?

A 2.4 P4 could be had for around $150.00 but I don't think you will notice much difference in speed. You don't necissarilly need to go through Dell. You could change the MB out but I think you will run into problems with the front panel connections(i.e. power switch, power LED, HDD LED). You may have to splice into these connections to make it work on the different MB. Other problems would be the I/O shield and the fact that the 8200 uses RDRAM or RAMBUS memory. There are not many MB out there that uses RAMBUS memeory anymore. I would probably just save you money for a replacement system instead of upgrading what you have. A P4 2.0 is still a decent machine by todays standard. That must have been pricey when it came out 3yrs ago.

Yeah it was $1400 w/finc charges but I went to my IT expert and this is what we came up with:

CPU: AMD socket 939 Athlon 64 3500 90mm 2.2 GHz, 512 KBL2 $289

Motherboard: ASUSn Force 4-chipset for AMD Socket 939 CPU $138

MEM: Corsair XMS Extreme 512 MB Memory DDR-PC-3200 Twin Pack $165

The new Case will be ATX Form Factor w/power supply of 450watts or more

This Rig will be mainly for gaming Any thoughts, is this good or if not what could make it better?

Thanks in advance!

It looks good but I'm Intel guy you might want an opinion from someone that favors AMD.
Quick question. Is the Corsair XMS Extreme 512 MB Memory DDR-PC-3200 Twin Pack $165 a pair of 512Meg sticks or a pair of 256Meg sticks that equate to 512Meg.

It's a pair of 512s

What Intel CPU would you get 3.0 or higher and how much would it cost.

If it was me, I would get a P4 650 processor (3.4GHz) because it has Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology. But If this is a gamming rig, I'm afraid to say go with AMD. AMD's benchmarks are much higher in gaming than with an Intel. I have had bad luck with AMDs in the past, thats why I'm a stonch Intel user.
