My 486DX2 66Mhz ran Win98 (originally Win 3.0) VERY smoothly. Probably smoother than any other PC I've ever had... of course, I did a bit of optimizing...
When I bought that 32mb SIMM I thought I had just gotten more memory than I'd ever use... before I upgraded to Win98 that is. (Don't ask why I just skipped Win95.) |

Hi Sarkast,
O.K., you got me on that one. First time I ever fibbed (if you believe that, you are worse than I am). I admit it, I started with the old Commodore 16, then commodore 64, then Radio Shack machines, and then went to heaven with the old (did I say that) 286 models. When I got my first 486. was glad to part with that 2000 bucks (my wife about died on that one) for that screaming machine. And, in that time, 2000 bucks was a chunk of change. My next was the Pentium Pro 200....wow, what a machine that was...and the rest is history...enough of them I can't count anymore because I got the fever and started building them myself. Anyhow, I do understand about the 486 machines and will (not) promise to never tell a fib again. Have a great evening. Mark Addendum: Missed the old 386, not a good machine, and later an Apple II, a McIntosh before I stuck with IBM compatibles, plus every OS since the old, early, and many DOS versions, win 3.1, win95, win98, win98se, winME, winXP and here I still am with XP Pro. Anyway, you get the picture and the age. Last edited by mark3567; 03-18-2005 at 09:21 PM. |

What would some people say... "as old as dirt"
Just kidding....My "beginnings" were some odd machines that i never knew the names of. (my dad brought them home from work) - i just remember they had these casette tape "drives" which made really melodic sounds when loading a program. LOL Then the mentioned 286 AT - wow we were all fascinated watching it draw fractals - and it only took about 1 minute to fill the screen. That was just soooo fast. After that things are a bit fuzzy cause my dad had his own computer business so there was always a new machine - components got swapped and all i really cared about was gaming and then the web.... It gets a little clearer again after my beloved AMD K6/2 450 machine w/ Riva TNT2 3D card. Oh how i loved that one.... I also used every OS in your list. Never got around to try linux yet even though i know i should....

First computer I used was my dad 486 66mz. I used that thing from like 1995-2001. Great machine but by 2001 I was not having fun using it any more. I finally bought the first computer that I paid for in 2001 which was a athlon 850mhz good machine that last me all the way up to december 2004. By this point most games was not running well on a 850mhz so I set out on making the gaming computer that I been dreaming about. This dream computer is the one am using now and is the favorite thig I ever possised. It is a athlon 64 fx-55 with 2gb ram and a geforce 6800 ultra. When I first got this thing running I could not believe how fast it was. after using it for 2 mounths I dont like playing video games on any computer other then my own lol.

To answer your question more directly nobody said a good pentium could not play games well we only said that a athlon 64 would play them even better. |

Eh, what about the newer line of socket T intel p4s with HT. Don't they about whoop AMD because of that? I'm building a "gaming" machine right now and I'm getting an intel processor.

My 2.0Ghz Athlon XP (2600+) with some light overclocking, and a 9800pro will outperform that link's PC in a lot of games.
It cost me less than $500 to built. A lost less. But I got some deals in the parts. Anyhoo, if you want gaming, I say P4 Extreme Editions, Athlon64 or Athlon FX. Preferably the Athlons. As for graphics card, neither that 3.2Ghz P4 nor my Athlon can fully utilize the 9800pro or the 9550 card. But they aren't "high end gaming" cards anymore. Although I know mine will run Doom3 pretty well. |

I posted that link to get you guys thinking. For that I'd say it worked. As you all talk about what you have and your experiences with it, our threadstarter Rudso, can hopefully make an informed decision, and get the best deal on what he needs to make his games enjoyable. Without costing more than it has to. Anyone know where to find the best deals on each piece? And no matter what you buy it seems, after you've bought it, you'll find it somewhere else cheaper. Just a fact of life. (Murphy's law)

Well they actually drop "all the time"... yes some will say - thats not true - because actually here and there they climb for a few weeks too. But in general - and looking at prices over a longer period of time they are always dropping.
As for websites - i like www.newegg.com. Their prices are good - sometimes you can fnd an item 5$ cheaper elsewhere but their service and shipping is outstanding.
