Thumbs Up Motherboard / Processor Question.

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone help me with a motherboard/processor question please

I have not really done a lot with processors and motherboards with regards to compatibilities and i was wondering.....

If a computer has got a Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3 Motherboard and have currently got an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ 2.5GHz.............

Then if i wanted a better processor has it got to be AMD or could i put Intel on there?

Is there a limit to how powerful the processor can be? (mother take it or not?)

If there are limits then what are they and how do you tell?

I know i am asking for a lot of answers but i would be greatful for any help.

Regards,

Re: Motherboard / Processor Question.

Gigabyte will tell you what cpu's you can use, and the minimum bios revision needed to recognize each cpu. Just click on cpu support to the right of the screen. There's another on the left, but you want the one the right.

Re: Motherboard / Processor Question.

That board will only take AMD processors that fit the AM2 and AM2+ sockets. More specifically, it supports only processors in this list (depending on BIOS version):

how do you tell?
Your motherboard manual will give you this information. Also, most manufacturer's web sites will give a compatibility list for both CPU and memory in addition to any available downloads such as manuals and software updates.
