Fitted a new USB module to laptop, now there is a fan problem

Hi all,

I have just finished fitting a new USB module to a Dell latitude C400 because the one that is on there was failing basically due to overuse and it ended up being loose and unusable, I done this the usual way desoldered the old usb and fitted the new one.

Obviously I had to fully dismantle the laptop first, anyway once I had put it all back together and switched it on, the USB port worked perfectly, everything seemed ok until I realised that the fan in the laptop didnt sound or feel like it was on so I installed speedfan and that didnt think i had any fan at all, anyway shortly after that I had CLICK and the laptop was off, no proper shut down it just instantly turned off, turned it back on and while it was loading windows CLICK and it was off again.

Do you think this is because of the lack of fan?

I let the laptop cool for a while and turned it on and it booted fine again, this time I didnt let it get too hot and turn off I just wanted to see if it got further than the windows loading screen this time.

Hopefully it is just the fan and I can replace it and be away,

Cheers for any help on this matter in advance.

Lee.

No cooling fan would certainly cause the problems you describe. It's overheating and turning itself off.

Re: Fitted a new USB module to laptop, now there is a fan problem

Thanks for the reply, I tested a fan from an acer laptop in the laptop with the fan that doesnt work, it didnt work!, it worked in its proper laptop but not the one i have been soldering onto, the voltages where different for both fans, do you think this is why it didnt work?

The fan out of the laptop i was working on did not work in the big laptop, the extendable cable still works,

Do you think that its definately my fan thats failed or is it possible that ive damaged the connector for my fans lead on the board?

I have ordered a new fan but im just wondering if i have wasted my money cause ive broke the board, saying that though i was soldering nowhere near the fan lead connector.

Regards,

Lee.

If you are stilling seeing voltage at the connector, then it wouldn't appear to be broken. I'd suspect a bad fan, or a power issue.

Thanks for replying,

turns out it was the fan that had failed, the new one worked fine and the laptop hasnt crashed once.

Thanks to all,

Lee.
