Question with audio wire

I am currently plugging the case wires onto the motherboard. There is an audio related wire that I don't understand anything about.

It is one wire, with 2 separate plugs at the end. One plug says "HD audio" and the other says "AC'97". Not only do I not know which to use, I don't understand the purpose, or what exactly the wire does.

Might someone explain this to me?
Thanks

Re: Question with audio wire

That's your front panel audio, the line out and microphone jacks on the case. I couldn't find the se2 on the asus site, but did find a couple of the m2n68 boards, both of which had hd audio, yours should be the same. if you have the motherboard manual it will show where the front panel audio header is, that's what you plug the connector into. It's a light green header near the pci slot at the corner of the board, ten pins with one missing, that's the key to orient it properly. 10-1 as it's sometimes called.

Thank you.

I see that connector, but I don't know which plug to put there. (The wire has 2 plugs at the end)

What is the difference between "HD audio" and "AC'97" ?

What is the difference between "HD audio" and "AC'97" ?
HD audio is "High Definition" audio which supercedes AC 97 and HD can play back more channels at a higher quality than AC 97.

Basically, this is for the front audio, which in the end is basically used as a headphone jack. You can select either one; you probably won't notice much of a difference between the two unless you have some pretty high end headphones.

In short, since your board supports HD, please go ahead and plug the HD one in.

Thanks!
