New mobo not working

Hi, I'm trying to slightly upgrade my mobo, but having a problem. The mobo I'm trying to install is almost the exact match to the one i want to remove, except it has a pcie 16x slot on it. when i hook up the new mobo, matching all the wires in the case to the same spots on the new mobo, and i hit the power button, all i get is the cpu fan come one for a second and then stop, nothing else happens. Every time i press the power button, the same thing, cpu fan for a sec then nothing, fan stops. And on a side note, besides the pcie slot, there is also a Molex connector on the mobo right next to where the rear case fan plugs in, i do not have this on old mobo. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: New mobo not working

Check the manual that comes with the new mobo.
Even if it is a similar spec it may not have connections in the same place.
Does the new mobo have an auxilary power connector (a four pin psu connector)
somewhere close to the top of the motherboard. If it does then connect this.
Please post the mobo manuacturer and model number.

Re: New mobo not working

Did the old mobo work ok with the psu you have.
I assume that the cpu heat sink is properly seated and with thermal tape/paste.
Post full spec for your pc.

Only mod i've done is upgrading to 3GB of ram, 2 1gig sticks, 2 512 sticks, and I currently have an ATI Radeon 9250 PCI video card in, but did not install that into the new mobo i was trying to use, and only installed one 512 stick of ram. And i've removed the modem some time ago, don't know why, didn't need it, so i removed it. Don't think that would really make much of a difference though. And I always use thermal paste.

My System

Re: New mobo not working

I would suggest doing the build on the bench.

Set the motherboard on a non conductive surface. The motherboard box is perfect for this. DO NOT PLACE THE MOTHERBOARD ON THE STATIC BAG! It can actually conduct electricity!
Install the CPU and heat sink.
Install 1 stick of RAM.
Install the video card and attach the power supply connection(s) to the card if your card needs it.
Connect the monitor to the video card.
Connect the power supply to the motherboard with both the 24pin main ATX Power connection and the separate 4 or 8 pin power connection.
Connect power to the power supply.
Do NOT connect ANYTHING else. Make sure you have the power connector on the CPU fan connected.
Use a small screwdriver to momentarily short the power switch connector on the motherboard. Consult your motherboard manual to find which two pins connect to your case's power switch. Then touch both pins with a screwdriver to complete the circuit and boot the system.

If all is well, it should power up and you should get a display. Then assemble the parts into the case and try again. If the system now fails to boot, you have a short in the case and need to recheck your motherboard standoffs.

If the system does not boot after this process, then you most likely have a faulty component. You'll need to swap parts, start with the power supply, until you determine what is defective.
