rebuilding old gateway system

Ok so heres my delema my nephews computer is a gateway 1.1 gig atalon xp with 512 megs of pc133 sdram, 16 meg nvidia agp graffix card and a 60 gig naster maxtor ide hard drive and a maxtor 100 gig slave with a dvd drive and a dvdr-rw drive. S after purchesing som parts to rebuild the system with some case modding I'm hoping to give my nephew a computer that will do basic stuff for a few more years. So I purchesed these parts for it
Asrock K7vt4a pro socket 462 mother board
amd atalon xp 3000+ cpu
Zalman socket 462 cpu cooler for cpu's up tp 3200+
2 gig mushkin ddr ram
A tube of as5 thermal paste (Artic silver 5)
New ide and floppy cables
256 meg ati agp video card

When I did a bench test on a cpu a friend gave me I didn't get any thing so I pulled the 1.1 atalon xp from my nephews comp and still got nothing after I set the fsb to 266 but no display. I don't know if I friedthe cpu or not, I did get the fans to works so far using a 250 watt psu (yeah I know crappy psu's lead to trouble" I'm working on replacing itwith a new one maybe a seasonic or something like that but that's gonna depend on who has the right model though. Is there any thing I can try to resolve the no display problem? I mean after the working cpu comes in? I'm not going to yank the old mb just to check if all i did was snag the cpu but the replacement it the one I'm testing.

Re: rebuilding old gateway system

Its very hard to even test that system with a 225W psu it should have at least a 400 watter in it. Does that psu have the 4 pin +12V if it does not the asrock board requires it and won't give a display without

Re: rebuilding old gateway system

the asrock only has the 20 pin atx connector for poweron the mother board the video card has none. So you're saying this system needs a 400 watt psu then? that would explain it though but I thought a 250 would be enough to run it. So any recomondations on a good psu? so far I only see one on newegg and it's the corsair 400 or 450 watt. I'd like to keep the price down some with out going to the faulty crappy brands. Newegg has very little to choose from when you get to looking at the 400 watt or less brands.

Re: rebuilding old gateway system

Wow your right I just downloaded your manual and that board don't have the extra 4 pin 12V there are very few 462 boards like that.

Yea I can't see a 225w powering it, I built many socket A systems and never used under 400w although I tested with quality 350W.

Yea don't use those junky brands, that don't have onboard video so your going to be using a video card witch is more draw, the corsair is very good.

Its so hard to test or do anything for that matter without a adequate psu in it, I mean there a chance you have a bad board but you can't really tell with out a more powerfull psu

Re: rebuilding old gateway system

Well I guess I'll have to wait a few days for a new one then, any other good brands besides corsair? I have a question, I used the athalon 1.1 cpu in the asrock mb and had the fsb set to 266 and didn't get any display so I put it back in the gateway and it won't do any thing but run the fans. Did I fry the cpu? Because it was working before I tried it

Re: rebuilding old gateway system

Ok now I need help in a psu selecton I found two cooler master psu's and two corsair psu's. I don't want to spend a bunch more if I don't have to. I wouldn't mind the 460 watt coolermater psu from tigerdirect so here are you choices.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...9834&CatId=106 40.00
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...7208&CatId=106 6500
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...6686&CatId=106 50.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171046 36.00
so iyo which one would be better?

Re: rebuilding old gateway system

Well I went ahead and decided my self and decided on this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139008 to be safe. So if any body knows an answer to the frying the athalon 1.1 gig cpu I would appriciate it cause I had planned on giving the old stuff to a freind for his comp.

Re: rebuilding old gateway system

You got a fine psu for your system, as far as the old cpu, unless you broke pins off I doubt you damaged it, its easier to damage a motherboard by miss handling it.

Are you being careful of static when handling parts?

Re: rebuilding old gateway system

I always ground my self by touching the case and using a anti- static wrist band. The two cheaper psu's were a miss read on my part so I'm glad I decided on the 400 watt corsair. Next time I should pay closer attention to people's sig's lol. I don't know why the atalon 1.1 gig cpu won't work any more in the original board, I think I might have fried that cpu some how. Oh well I will get another one for thirty bucks and try it in the old board. Right now the new stuff is waiting to be tested when the psu gets here tuesday or wednesday. The thing I picked up the most hangin around here is you get what you pay for.
