Can't boot my new PC
I think I may have gotten a mobo that is incompatible with my processor. Can somebody tell me? I bought a
ECS PM800-M2 VIA PM800 Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 Specifications: Supported CPU: Intel P4 Celeron/Northwood/Prescott Processors Chipset: PM800 + VT8237 FSB: 533/800 MHz RAM: 2x DIMM support DDR 266/333/400 Max 2GB Slots: 1x AGP 8X, 3x PCI, 1x CNR Ports: 2x PS/2, 1x COM, 1x LPT, 8x USB2.0(Rear 4), 1x RJ45, 1x VGA, Audio Ports IDE: 2x ATA 133 up to 4 Devices and an Intel celeron D335,2.8 GHz, 533MHz FSB, 256K L2 Cache Processor Model# RK80546RE072256 Item # N82E16819112198 Specifications: Model: Intel Celeron D Core: Prescott Operating Frequency: 2.8GHz FSB: 533MHz Cache: L1/12K+16K; L2/256K Voltage: 1.25-1.40V Process: 90 nm Socket: Socket 478 FSB: 533/800 MHz RAM: 2x DIMM support DDR 266/333/400 Max 2GB Slots: 1x AGP 8X, 3x PCI, 1x CNR Ports: 2x PS/2, 1x COM, 1x LPT, 8x USB2.0(Rear 4), 1x RJ45, 1x VGA, Audio Ports IDE: 2x ATA 133 up to 4 Devices I put it all together, wired it up and nothing. No sign of life at all. I switched my power supply to one I know was working, but it made no difference. HELP! ![]() Ok I answered my own question. I looked at the website supporting this mobo (thanks to another posting I found here) and saw that it is compatible. http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Product...=CPU%20Support So what can be wrong? I have it installed correctly.(not my first cpu install) I have ddr333 pc2700 256 MB ram installed, checked and double checked all my wires and plugs, changed power supply, and gone crazy for hours. Any suggestions. It acts as if it isnt even plugged into the wall!

Hi,
There are a couple of places to start. Here is what I would do or where I would look first: First, make sure you have the CPU/heatsink fan connected to the motherboard. Then make sure you have not only the ATX plug connected, but also the 12 volt square (molex) plug connected to the motherboard, the on/off switch hooked up, and then try it. If nothing, take the on/off wire from the case to the motherboard and short between those pins to see if the switch is functioning properly. If nothing then suspect that you have a short either between the motherboard sides and the back plate, the PCI (metal) covers for unused PCI ports, actual PCI card plates, or between the motherboard and the motherboard posts. If you see nothing visually, the continue searching. (1) Take all cards out, all drives unconnected, no video card, leave in only one stick of memory, the CPU, the heatsink and fan connected to the motherboard, the keyboard, try it and see what happens. If it comes on and stays on, then put the video card in and try it. If it stays on, then put it back together, piece by piece and testing as you go by trying it after each new piece is put back. If this does not yield any results, take the mother board out of the case and put it on a non-conductive surface beside the case and go back to buildng it like step #1 above. If it works, then look for a misplaced motherboard post or shorting on the case and solve that problem before you put it back in piece by piece, testing while you add each component. That is where I would begin with this unit. |

so far no good
Well, I tried alot of things just mentioned to no avail. I completely unplugged everything except the power to the mobo, made sure the heatsink and fan were connected gd, left my one stick of memory (took it out and put it back in again),reconnected the power to the wall and still no life. I then changed the battery to another one that I know works, still nothing.
I'm going to take out the processor and start from scratch I guess, but I am having a vicious time removing the fan and heatsink.... its very tight. So I'm gonna have to be careful. If I get it back togeher and still no juice, I will try the power switch to make sure it is functioning properly. In the mean time any other suggestions may be worthy of consideration. Thank you.

I'm guessing you had a short to the case somehow. Make sure you have all the right standoffs in place (and none of the wrong ones! LOL).
Or maybe there was a screw rolling around in there touching things.... Good luck!

Hi,
In addition to what twistedbard told you, make sure that the side of the board is not touching the case. Take a piece of paper and see if it slips between the motherboard and case all the way around. I have seen several of these with the newer boards. However, a reminder is that the motherboard posts (extra or misplaced) are more likely the cause of this problem. Try all options...look at it this way, probably don't have a dead motherboard and look at all the experience you are getting. Ha Ha Addendum: Guess I was slow typing on that one. So glad you got it going before I posted again. |

Hey Twisted,
Between the two of us, we are going to make techs out of some of these guys. People like donjo are nice to work with, aren't they?" Just look at all the tech experience he got in taking this apart and putting it back together. Anyhow, glad he got it going and nice working with you on another one. |

Yeah, we seem to gravitate towards similar questions. I came here last week seeking some help and figured while I was around I could answer a few questions that looked like I could help with. Now I think I'm hooked. Especially since three or four of them now have actually got functional because of something I told them. It's pretty nice to help just for the sake of helping. Seems like in my normal job I don't get to do that as much as I used to.. anyway.... yeah, good to work with ya on stuff! We make a pretty good team. :)

Well Twisted maybe you can join the hardware team - if thats your field of expertise. I read through an old thread when it was still possible to join teams - now you have to be invited. Maybe Mark will invite you.... ;-)
Good job though !

Do you even get the small green light on the MOBO to light up? If so, it might be your wiring from your power button to your MOBO. I had no idea how to wire my MOBO because of no directions and different colors referenced on Intel website. Converted Old Gateway Full Tower to D865PERL with 3.0E Processor. Added a second hard drive, Dual Layer DVD burner and new video card. Suppose to have 2 GIG of RAM but only 1 is working right now. Anyways, little green light worked but no power supply or anything else because of wrong wiring harness set up...
