When I start up my computer, the system runs but there is no signal to the monitor(even though I got a new video card a few months ago that has worked really well) and I tried to reset the system it but it wouldn't let me. I opened up the computer and the cpu fan wasn't spinning - Did I fry my CPU?
Please HELP! |

Probably didn't fry it if it is of recent vintage.
Intel CPU's have thermal protection built into CPU to throttle down if overheat condition occurs. With AMD thermal protection is controlled by the mobo. My Asus for instance came with a default to shut down at 65C. Without a fan running that will happen before system boots up. So if you have a PC of recent vintage you might be OK. I cain't speak to manufactured PC's such as Dell, Compaq, Gateway ect. as I don't own one. I am talking about custom build's. Get the fan working and hopefully you will be OK. You can try testing with the side off and a regular house fan blowing towards the CPU. Charlie

Hey Charlie,
I tried putting a fan next to my open computer, but I had the same problem. I have an AMD 1.3Ghz processor and my computer was custom made and is about 4 years old. Can you think of anything else I can do? thanks for your help |

I replaced the heatsink/fan
I replaced the heatsink/fan and no luck, the same problem happened. My diagnosis is the motherboard and possibly the CPU - If anyone can think of anything different, please let me know before I go buy new parts or a new system
