I gave up on the VIA s-ATA driver in favour of trying the Promise driver, considered more stable by some. The VIA S-ATA driver was giving me nothing but headaches as I tried to determine why my system kept crashing. Some people have reported extreme fragmentation with the Via driver and I too fell victim to it.
My rig is as follows: ASUS A8V Deluxe (Auto overclock setting), Winchester 3000+, 512MB Corsair RAM (Slots A1 & B1, Auto timings - system crashed when on manual timings), 80GB S-ATA Seagate Barracuda, ASUS 9600XT w/vivo (AGP fastwrite disabled). My problems have been many but this is the current one: In doing a clean install with a single S-ATA drive the Promise controller I had to have the RAID option enabled for it to work. In IDE mode, WinXP setup wouldn't detect my drive, even though I had just installed the Promise driver by way of pressing F6, then "S". So I installed WinXP with the Promise driver in RAID mode without a hitch. The difficulty now is that, while WinXP is up and running, it is still detecting a conflict with the RAID device (in hardware settings, device manager - yellow exclamation beside the words "RAID controller") I really want this nightmare to end so could someone help me troubleshoot this? I'm not planning on getting another drive in the near future. All I want is for my single S-ATA drive to work on this bloody board without any problems. When I switch the Promise controller to IDE from RAID in the BIOS when rebooting the system resets and keeps doing that. Any suggestions? Thanks MM |
