New CPU for Vostro 200 1.8Ghz
Okay, I truly appreciate your help if possible after scouring the net for info on changing my dads CPU from a 1.8ghz to something a bit faster, say 2.8 or 3.0 intel dual core. I have come across tons of OC'ing articles, or the usual guy that says "go to dell's site." Sorry, I am working through my mac to get this done, and their site doesn't support Safari. (I know, fruit user here)
Here is what I know about the old mans rig: Dell Vostro 200 1.8 Ghz intel dual core CPU 2 G RAM WIN XP home 800Mhz BUS Intel G33 chipset I truly appreciate what help you guys have to offer, thanks a million! |

Re: New CPU for Vostro 200 1.8Ghz
Thank you very much. After much debate, countless hours of research and headache, I think getting a whole new rig will be the best and safest way to go. I might as well leave that one alone and use it for office/home use.

Yes I agree even though the CPU speed will be faster the ram and PSU will hold you back from a great gaming PC.
Are you looking to build? |

Re: New CPU for Vostro 200 1.8Ghz
Well, I am not opposed to building, as I have built about three systems in the past (last one about four years ago, so much has changed), but trying to keep my budget around $500. What I would like to have is this:
2.8 Ghz or higher (3.0 Ghz preferably) dual core CPU 4 GB RAM GeForce 9600 GT or better VID Card w/ 1 G of memory Win XP OS DVD burner As for monitors, KB and mouse, I have all of that. Just need the meat of the matter. Not really much to ask for, and I have found some pre-built towers for around my budget price, but they are missing at least one of the components I am looking for. Primarily the OS. I have scoured the ebays, amazons, neweggs, etc. but finding it hard to meet my desires. If you have any suggestions, by all means please share. Very much appreciated. |

Re: New CPU for Vostro 200 1.8Ghz
For gaming you want Intel, an E8400 and a P45 MB with a decent PSU and XP it'll be around $700+ for good quality components, for a 1gig 9600GT you looking at the same price as a 512 9800GT/GTS250 I'd rather have the faster card. AMD CPU's are cheaper but don't game with Intel until you get to the X4 Phenom II's but then the prices equalize however a decent AMD board is more costly.
