my system wont boot after removal of cd rom

hi
recently i removed my cd rom and then onwards whenever i start my pc the computer freezes and the xp logo screen does not appear. it gets stuck to the screen :
NVDIA TNT2 MODEL 64 VGA BIOS
COPYRIGTH (c) 1996-2000 NVIDIA CORP
32 RAM

i tried to access the BIOS but my keyboard also stops working shortly after starting (i use a normal keyboard not a usb one). My system is supposed to boot from cd-rom first then dvd rom then the hard disk. i tried placing xp bootable cd in my dvd rom but it also doesnt work.

My cdrom is not available at this time and i am not willing to buy a new one just to replace and test. if theres any other way i could deal with this trouble please please do inform me.

I believe Manic is guiding you in the right direction. You could also try clearing the CMOS.

Re: my system wont boot after removal of cd rom

Make sure the jumper on the harddrive is set up as master, by itself
on the cable. There should be a diagram on the top of the drive. You
should not have the harddrive on the same ide cable as the cdrom/dvd
drive, but ive seen people do it, not recommended.

Re: my system wont boot after removal of cd rom

What is the brand name of the hard drive? IF Western Digital, you must remove all jumpers and place it on the end of the ribbon cable.

My System

Re: my system wont boot after removal of cd rom

Your motherboard has Primary and secondary Ide connections. Set the hard drive as master on the primary ide and the dvd rom drive as master on the secondary ide connection.

Re: my system wont boot after removal of cd rom

ok... there are two ide cables ...one has got a blue , black , and a gray coloured jumper .... i think the blue goes to the mother board while the middle jumper that is the gray one is for master drive (my hard drive) and the end of the ide cable having the balck jumper goes to the slave drive (my dvd rom).....i tried this combination it does not work.....i have tried without connecting the dvd rom ....still does not work.

i have another ide cable having all balck jumpers...i connected one end to the motherboard and then tried the middle jumper and the end jumper one after anohter ....still does not work...

i have a maxtor brand hard drive...(if that helps anyone)

on motherboard there are two places(or sockets) where you can put the jumpers (one is white the other is black) ...i would like to know the differnce between them...if anyone could help me out..

First of all, you need to use the cable with the Blue, Gray, and black connector, because that is an 80 connector cable. The other one is a 40 connector cable and WILL NOT work with a hard drive.

Then, you have your cable placement messed up. Put the MASTER drive on the END or the black end of the ribbon cable with your drive set to master. The Gray connector is a for a SLAVE drive with the jumpers set to slave. Give that a try.
